Struggling

I'm not sure if this is really the right place to post this, but here it goes. I'm a second year university student and honestly I'm struggling so much both academically and socially. I realise that it's only been a month but I'm behind on all my subjects and stress is really getting to me. I was very sick for the first week which caused me to have a slow start to the semester but now I'm completely overwhelmed and don't know what to do. I try to sit down and get work done but I'm just so lost with all the content. I don't know anyone doing the same subjects as me and most of my friends are in a different course. I've said no to pretty much all invites from friends to go out so I can study but instead of getting anything done I just stress, which is also making my social life suffer. I'm struggling to sleep because I know the moment I wake up I will be overwhelmed by anxiety again. I've struggled with some mental health issues last year and that got a lot of people close around me involved and to be completely honest I don't really want to make a big deal of it again. Dropping my subjects to take a break from university isn't an option (financial reasons) and I really don't know what to do. It doesn't help that I live literally hours away from uni and feel like breaking down emotionally all the time. I want to get back on track so desperately but I feel like I can't.

Hey there.

I’m sorry to hear you’re having a rough time.

If you’re struggling with your mental health, I’d encourage you to speak to a qualified professional. I’ll leave you with some links below. Your University likely offers counselling services too, which you may find useful.

In terms of getting on track with your coursework, I’d recommend taking the time to add all your assessment dates to a calendar. This will give you an overview, and from there you can write a to-do list. Hopefully having some sort of plan of attack might help you feel less overwhelmed. If you’re struggling with the content, don’t be afraid to email your tutor and go to office hours.

I understand you cannot defer for the semester, however, you may be able to reduce your workload to 75%, and study 3 units instead of 4 units. You will still qualify for Youth Allowance. :)
