If you are wanting to do anything in the medical field (i.e. doctor, medical research, developing instruments for medical use, etc) a Bbiomed is the degree for you.

No. It's not a simple pathway to medicine. I think people choose it only because the subjects are relevant (and so easier to transfer lateR) but you can do pretty much the same thing through a science degree as well, I think.

You can do medical research (drugs?) with biomedicine. I think you could also do some biotech.

The bachelor of Biomedicine is a preferred pathway into graduate entry Medicine, optometry, dentistry, physiotherapy, veterinary science (pretty much anything in the health field). There are also many people in my course who want to go on and do honors, masters, phd etc and work in research.

Yep, but with the science degree, you need to pick the right subjects in order to do post-grad med or whatever in the medical field whereas in biomed, the subjects are chosen for you and you're fine right from the start.

Yeah that's right. For example, we have to do Physics 2: Life sciences & environment/Physics for Biomedicine (depending on whether you did physics in year 12) as a compulsory subject in first year, since if you wish to do optometry you require a physics subject as a prerequisite. Whereas if you are in science, you have to do physics 1 first semester and then physics:life sciences and environment.
Also, in second year, instead of having to choose anatomy and physiology subjects to meet the requirements for certain graduate degrees, it is all covered in the one subject Integrated human structure and function which we have to do in second year.
So yeah, you can meet the prerequisites doing science, it's just that Biomedicine has been tailored as a pathway to Graduate entry degrees, and so it is the preferred pathway.

Teacher - Special Education<<<<<FAIL no disrespect to teachers, who I do highly value but to get a 99.95 and do this...

hmmm I think it would be 'FAIL' to receive a high ENTER and choose the highest possible course it would get you into just for the sake of it

more intelligent to be able to get a high ENTER AND use it to achieve your desired career option

I was kidding. I was trying to stereotype what old fashioned parents do, who automatically cringe when their child says "I want to become an artist" or "I want to become a teacher". And I  totally agree, there are many cases where people have gotten high ENTERS but didn't do law, med or anything like that, and I respect that. I hope you or anyone else didn't take it in a literal sense. I was just fooling around

I don't think many parents would cringe at wanting to be a special education teacher.

I was talking about teaching in general. And yes they would cringe if they don't know the difference between teacher and special education teacher.

To the OP, are you considering doing biomed? What are you looking to become?

Why would parents cringe at their child becoming a teacher? It's not a bad profession.

....traditional parents I'm talking about I tried to stress that distinction I was heavily generalising. LOL, this is from a person whose parents think Bachelor of Arts= drawing xD. Parents only cringe ebcause they think its underpaid...but in recent times this has changed dramatically, with Victorian teachers being highest paid in the nation.

@appian way= i DID NOT say teachers are dumb (in relation to the -ve karma) please copy/paste where I said that.

I ensured I included the statement where I highly value teachers because i KNEW people would take that comment out of context= PARENTS in their generation would not tend to want their 99.95 student becoming a teacher, or an artist. Read Kite Runner...read/watch asian books movies or meet people...visit the middle east...I am talking about parents who want their child to be lawyers, doctors etc.

@everyone. Why has it all been turned against me for merely voicing a generalisation. I do not see why I am forced to defend myself against baseless accusations. I  DID NOT agree with the stances taken by SOME parents, just merely pointing them out.

To point out I was not being serious, please read my reply to chem-nerd. She did not accuse me of anything, but clarified what I was saying, and so I replied to her in agreement she was correct.

If I had anything AGAINST teaching, why would I have posted in a previous thread I consider becoming a lecturer as a career possibility. Without teachers society would be stuffed.
