Hmmm... this is a tough question, indeed...

I just tried it, but then I get stuck at the bit where the right side has a . It seems to be the bit which causes the problem... I'm not sure how to get rid of it...

*is also interested how to get the answer*  :D

But funny thing is if you solve on the TI-89 you get an ellipse equation?  :uglystupid2:

LOL...so funny..
cant believe this question is more difficuilt as it seems. i got it from practice exam 2 of the neap smartstudy guide and exam revision book. there working out is confusing at best. i got an elliptical equation, however could not prove it to be the correct one. i will post the correct solution in a short while.

I have this book as well, and I found the question you are talking about.
You have incorrectly typed the question...  :o the question is actually:


I did the question again, after finding out the correct version of the question, and came to the correct answer. Wasn't as hard as it was first perceived due to the typo. =P When I looked at the working of the book, compared to mine, it is practically the same... I don't think there is any other way of doing... however, if you still have trouble with the book's working, feel free to ask. :)
