hello guys, i need help with the differences between EV and RV, i keep getting them mixed around and if its ok to leave a example to make it easier
The EV is the explanatory variable and it's primary purpose is to explain or justify a change in the response variable.
Consider two variables: location and house price.
Which one of these two variables would explain the other? Well, depending on the location the house price is going to differ.. so the explanatory variable is location because the location explains the house price.
The location influences the price not the other way around A house price is definitely going to be higher if you buy in Metro Melbourne as opposed to regional or rural Victoria. Same goes for if you wanted to buy for example in Toorak as opposed to Broadmeadows (first two I could think of soz)
It's important to recognise that these relationships don't have to be exactly linear and in alot of cases textbooks deliberately make these relationships difficult to identify.
Remember EV always goes on the X axis of your scatterplot.
P.S - You are definitely not the only one who gets confused with this!
