repeating a year 12 subject?--->good idea?

Do you get penalised somehow if you repeat a unit 3/4 subject again? My teacher says that you automatically lose 10% if you do as a consequence. But I think (not sure) she is assuming that you will drop a VCE subject in order to redo another. If you still do one more subject than everybody else (so 6 VCE subjects) but repeat it, just to check out your luck and you wanna have another go at the exams. is it a good idea? has anyone done that?

you can repeat 3/4's. There aren't any penalties.

Yer, that's what I thought but 2 teachers have said that there is a consequence. One teacher has told me there aren't any penalties. so i'm confused, i guess it's more for reassurance than anything that i've started this thread. anyway, for people who think there are no penalties or no penalties keep posting for my reassurance.

When in doubt, if your mother doesn't know the answer, then Google does:

Quote
There is no penalty for repeating the VCE or individual subjects, however the same unit can not count twice towards the VCE unit requirements.

The Victorian Tertiary Admissions Centre (VTAC) advises that it does not apply a penalty for repeating VCE studies when calculating the Equivalent National Tertiary Entrance Rank (ENTER).

No, it was only changed in 2005 or something.

DOUBLE EDIT:  Damn, got beaten to it.  Thanks TonyHem.

Firstly what subject do you have in mind? Secondly what study score are you predicting you will get?

After looking at the vcaa website you can be assured you will not get any penalty. I personally wouldn't recommend it, but if it's english and you fear you won't get a high enough score to do your course then I would recommend repeating.

like what hard said, if you get bored with something easily or it doesn't challenge you much (which im sure if you repeated a subject this would be the case) then don't do it but if you enjoy it and think you would stay motivated, go right ahead :) good luck!

Firstly what subject do you have in mind?

Bio, it's pretty easy. just wanting another go at exams.

Secondly what study score are you predicting you will get?

I think I will get 35+ this year, but I feel as though I can get 40+ easily (and possibly 45+) if I redo it. As you can see assuming my Bio study score does not form one of my increments, I will be losing a lot of marks. I remember quite a bit also, so it won't take too much time. I am also doing chemistry next year and there is quite an overlap with bio.

I think it would be a better option to pick up another subject instead. If you just want to get a higher study score, then perhaps pick an easier subject, which you have an interest in and think you won't get bored in it. Doing bio again will bore you no matter how much you love it. Chem has a bit of overlap with bio but really you'll want something else to do

That's just it though, there's nothing left to pick. My school only offers a small portion of VCE subjects and only a few of those I know I'd do well in.

there's no point in repeating a subject if you know u have given it everything u can in the first place. However, if you know that there is still something left within you, or u know that ur potential is higher and u can get better. Do it.

realistically, how much more effort would you put into re-doing it? especially considering you will have at least four other unit 3/4 subjects that will be taking up quite a lot of your time and effort

I think you'd be better off preparing as hard as you can for the upcoming exam and get the best possible SS you can this year.

What subject are you considering dropping in order to repeat it? If you're not planning on dropping one to repeat it I STRONGLY advise you not to do it. You would just be putting your other subjects at risk.

No more than 5 hours a week. I'll also do it through distance education, so that will leave me with more free periods to focus on other subjects.

My school won't be offering specialist due to a lack of people wanting to do it next year. Teachers have been pressuring everyone to drop it for further but I find Further boring and tedious. if i repeat bio i will do 6 subjects because i don't want to lose an increment.

EDIT: Just to check, you can't get two study scores for a particular subject if you repeat the same subject, right?
