Selecting subjects

I'm currently in the process of choosing subjects for Bachelor of Arts at University of Melbourne and I'm a little confused as to what I am supposed to do... what are arts discipline subjects? And is it true you don't need to choose your major and minors yet? If so, how do I choose the two breadths that I'm undertaking in the first year?

Unfortunately, it does not help in answering my question about choosing breadths as when I tried to choose breadths, it came out as majors and such... but thank you :)

Have you tried submitting your breadths under the 'Breadth and Free Points' area, as opposed to the Major structure area? I know just how frustrating the study plan page can be!

It shows up like the attachment below:
how do you submit breadths under it? and i was also under the impression that Japanese can be taken as a breadth but it seems to only show up as a major

You'll need to click 'add to study planner' under the Breadth structure to enrol in breadth subjects. If you're enrolled in an Arts degree, language subjects are part of the degree, and therefore are not considered as breadths. Unless you want to complete Japanese as a major, you'll need to enrol yourself in Japanese subjects under the Arts discipline structure.

Ohh I see, thank you so much for helping! I only need to choose two breadth subjects after that right? The breadths and free points showed up but how does it work now?

You must complete a minimum of 4 breadths (50 points). You can decide to add two more breadths (hence the 75 points), or you can fill in the last 25 points with further Arts discipline subjects (basically any arts subject that you can't fit in the level 1/2 spaces). Let me know if that makes sense or not :)

I'm sorry, I must be annoying, I looked at the list and Japanese showed up as one of the breadths so i guess I can pick it? For first year, we only need to pick two breadths don't we? So is it ok to just select and enroll in two breadths for the time being until the next year? Or is it not allowed?

Apologies- I wasn't aware that Japanese belongs to the Asia Institute, not the School of Language and Linguistics. You don't actually have to complete any breadths in first year. So long as you complete the required 75 credit points by the end of your degree, it really doesn't matter.

Oh I see! But it is ok to just choose two breadths for the time being right? Thank you so much for your help! (I see you did/are doing Linguistics, that's what I plan to do too!)

Yes, that's fine. But if you aren't intending on completing them in semester 1, don't enrol in them (plan them instead). This just safeguards against the highly unlikely chance that you forget you are enrolled in the subject, and subsequently have to pay for it.

I'm so glad to hear that you're planning to pursue Linguistics! Overall, the organisation and enthusiasm of teaching staff has been excellent. I'm looking forward to entering my second year of the major :D

One last question, I swear, when I'm searching for arts discipline and foundation subjects, the general arts level (arts in florence) appears with an asterisk and I'm wondering if it is compulsory to take it? Although, it does not say the availabilities...

All the best for your second year of Linguistics! I hope you have a great year!

Please don't worry about asking questions! I can fully understand how confusing, and sometimes overwhelming, subject enrolment can be.

This subject is definitely not compulsory. The reason for the asterisk is to alert students to the fact that this subject actually takes place in Florence. You can find all Arts foundation subjects (one of these is compulsory) here and all other general Art elective subjects from these categories, here .
