Chance of getting Unimelb Round 2 Offer

I recently got offered my second preference which was actuarial science plus commerce at Monash. My first preference was commerce plus guaranteed Juris Doctor at Melbourne. My ATAR this year was 99.10. I have completed all the prerequisite VCE subjects for commerce at Melbourne. I've decided to ditch the "guaranteed Juris Doctor" part and put commerce with guaranteed engineering or straight commerce at Melbourne as my top preference in VTAC. The lowest selection rank for comm is 93. What are the chances of me getting a second round offer on 4th Feb? I nearly freaked out when I read from VTAC that only unis still with vacancies will participate in subsequent offer rounds.

I reckon you've still got a very decent chance of getting an offer, as commerce at Melbourne had an ATAR of 95 to get in when I did it, so they obviously lowered it to attract more applicants. Also, especially as you've got such a high ATAR (btw congrats for that), then you should be fine as you'd be likely one of the few people with such a high ATAR awaiting for a second round offer, so you for sure would be prioritised in that regard to others waiting for a second round offer due to your ATAR being so high. Don't be stressed about it though. I'm doing comm/actuarial science at Monash right now, entering my 3rd year so happy to help you out with any advice if you need.

This.

Majority of offers are made at round 1, and as the rounds go on, the chance of being offered one is reduced. Is the course you have applied for CSP? If so, the places in the course are capped due to the limited number of subsidised places available. If you meet all the requirements for the degree you have put in the preference, I do like your chances as you're probably right at the top of the selection order for round 2... but it will then be entirely dependent on whether the uni participates in round 2 (they won't for this particular course if all places have been filled & nobody withdraws).

I'd definitely be considering a backup plan just in case - definitely accept the offer you got in round 1 though. Don't let it lapse or reject it as you may end up with nothing in the end. You can withdraw from it later on if you decide to accept another course.

thank you for your reply! I am indeed tossing between actuarial at Monash and Melbourne at the moment. I was wondering what you think about the difficulty of the maths you're doing at the moment? How are they compared to methods and/or spesh?

Thank you! Do you know if/where I might be able to access the data that contains the number of enrolments Melbourne takes in per year for commerce? Much appreciated.

In terms of stats you will want to know - number of enrolments Melbourne takes for the BComm (normal) is slightly under 1150 for the previous cohort. (Last year's data here.) However, there's no saying whether there will will be the same amount of spaces this year.

As Aaron has stated, accept your Round 1 offer regardless - you'll still be studying commerce either way. Better to have a place than none at all. You will be able to unenrol from your Round 1 offer, if you receive your new Preference #1 in Round 2 onwards.
