Biomedicine Bioengineering Stream???

Hey guys,

Quick question. If I were to do Biomedicine, with the Bioengineering major, replacing Calc II and Linear Algebra with Acc Math 1 and 2, however then after 1st year decided to move back into the normal Biomedicine stream (i.e. to major in neuroscience), would I confront any difficulty in graduating from the BBMED?

Thanks.

EDIT: As, essentially, the two units, Mathematics for Biomedicine and Experimental Design and Data Analysis have not been completed.

This would not pose any problems in terms of finishing your degree on time. The two first year maths subjects aren't required again in the future as prerequisites.

Hope this helps.

Thanks Alter! I was just worried that because it is a form of 'gaming the system' - then they might decline you your degree until you complete the core subjects....

I did that after my first sem when I did acc maths 1 so you should be allowed to do it as I never did Mathematics for Biomedicine

If I am not mistaken, haven't things changed since 2013? i.e. did Mathematics for Biomedicine exist as a course? Or is it Experimental Design and Data Analysis that was added?

I did Experimental Design and Data Analysis in sem 2 and accelerated maths 1 in sem 1. Maybe maths for biomedicine was called something else then not sure.

Can confirm: you will not have any issues if you wish to no longer pursue the Bioengineering Systems pathway after first year.

However, if you choose to switch back to the standard pathway after only first semester, you will be required to do both Mathematics for Biomedicine, and Experimental Design and Data Analysis in semester 2 since they are core first-year subjects for the standard pathway.

Similar question, in the Bioengineering pathway PHYC10007 Physics for Biomedicine is replaced by ENGR10003 ESD 2. Would not completing PHYC10007 have an effect on the timely completion of this degree?

No, it won't have any effect. Pursuing the Bioengineering pathway requires first year physics (either PHYC10007 or PHYC10006) to be replaced by ESD2 (ENGR10003).

As a general blanket statement, everyone should note that choosing the Bioengineering systems pathway for your first two years does not lock you into doing that major. However, it might limit what you can switch to if you decide to change during or after 2nd year.

If one does decide to switch back to the standard pathway, when you do that might have an effect on what subjects you will need to take in certain semesters (see my previous post in this thread for an example).

As an addition, Physics for Biomedicine isn't a particularly good subject. For a very long time it's been fairly roundly criticised, and imo reasonably so. Missing out on it is fine :)
