Soft instrumental music helps me because vocals/lyrics are too distracting if I'm trying to study.

I've heard that as well from a motivational speaker.  I thought it was a load of bull so I dismissed it, but perhaps I was wrong?

Hmmm, heres some info from the net. I must admit, i am a bit skeptical though...

Quote from:
Research findings show that Baroque music enhances learning of foreign languages and improves performance in some types of tests.

Baroque music "stabilizes mental, physical and emotional rhythms," according to Chris Boyd Brewer, "to attain a state of deep concentration and focus in which large amounts of content information can be processed and learned."

Depends on the person, doesn't it? I find listening to music keeps my mind from wandering.

As for the type of music, I agree with minilunchbox - instrumental music (or at least music where the vocals are part of the soundscape i.e. not prominent) is perfect to study to. A good example is anything by Sigur Rós.

I somehow doubt it will help >_<

I listen to J-Pop in the hope it will help my Japanese though.

Is that the guy who his father in law had his riches taken away from South African Government a few times until he became a millionaire here? I tried baroque music for a day...after 5 minutes I just bursted out laughing at how stupid I felt trying it. Shows my maturity...
Hmm...next year already. Well better set my goals and all...(raw)

I've never tried listening to any variant of classical music while studying, but I find listening to some quicker songs, like some by led zeppelin, the clash, CCR, guns and roses, inxs etc, can help me focus better and work quicker, although I then find it harder to work without them (this last week I've had to go cold turkey from listening to music while studying, its killing me)

Yeah that's the one. Damn, my school made it out that he NEVER does pep talks for schools and this was a great rarity. :p
