Delete Transition to commerce. trust me it will fuck up your timetable.

What exactly is Transition to Commerce? It's not an actual subject is it?

The people at Academic Advice Day today (obviously)encouraged us to do it. How important is it?

Nah its not really important. I'd encourage you to go to it, but delete it off your subject choice thing on SIS.

Brendan, how valuable do you think that Diploma in Maths Science will be? As I really only really want to study 3 years (4 years with honours).

Or should I just be better off doing it as just breadth subjects...

I'm not sure, might depend on what you want to do.

I'm taking a combined Commerce/Science degree with a major in mathematics for my science component if that's any indication

Even though, you're doing the older generation degrees, what is the length of your course?

I found this on the following page:

Accelerated Pathway

Such pathways are available to students who demonstrate their engagement with University study by obtaining the necessary degree-specific average mark during their first year of enrolment, and are then willing/permitted to overload in subsequent semesters. The following accelerated six-semester “fast track” sequence is one possibility. There are three alternative programs under subject 4. The choice of program depend upon the student's degree and their school preparation in mathematics.

From what I can see...

Can all the subjects in the Accounting (accredited) major + Finance major fit into this?

I made one, and took out Accounting for Corporate Entities, Business and Financial Analysis as well as Econometrics from what you recommended.
However, I don't see these subjects on their sample course plan. I showed earlier. Is that a problem?

Also I can't find any info on PBL on the site. Can you give me a link to it. Thanks.  :)

nop doesn't work like that buddy, you can't overload in your first year.

PBL: https://app.portal.unimelb.edu.au/CSCApplication/view/2009/732-103

The Com/Sci double degree is 5 yrs

Ok then, I'll have to really speak to one of those advisers. LOL.

I thought I didn't overload the first year though. They're all the same subjects in the same semesters you listed above?

oh wait yeah true, i didn't scroll.

and you included PBL twice.
you are also missing BFA and econometrics...

if you are really set on 3 yrs, then just do math as breadth rather than the diploma. so your breadth subs will be:
PBL
Corp Law
Tax Law
Calc 2
Linear Alg
Prob
Stats

either way your first year program is the same so don't stress. you can leave all this until october when you have tasted the subjects and know more.

Yep, I thought the same too. No point thinking about Year 2 and 3 subjects so early. Well, thanks for your help.  :)

Last of all, so I can definitely do PBL instead of Quantitative Methods 1 - even though it says its compulsory?

EDIT: Ah found it,
[1] [2]Students who complete 620-201 Probability and 620-202 Statistics are exempt from the quantitative subjects in the compulsory component but must still complete 200 points from core subjects.

Is that the rule?

When i say PBL i mean Principles of Business Law

doing 201 Probability and 202 Statistics from teh math faculty satisfies the quantitative requirement of the BCom.

Most people satisfy the quant requirement of the BCom by doing QM1 and one of QM2, Intro Econometrics

Whatever you do, don't do subjects over the summer between ur penultimate yr and final yr. so try not to fail anything in 2nd yr.

Advice taken.

Do you see any disadvantage in not taking Quantitative Methods?

Basically with your way, I'm just moving all the quantitative requirement of the BCom. into the second year (Probability, Stats)?
So if I fail, or get below 70% in Calculus 2, I am stuffed.

Or could I just do it like this....

For first year, Keep QM-1, so breadth subjects: Calculus 2, PBL,
2nd year, Take QM-2, so breadth subjects: Linear Algebra, Probability, Corporate Law
3rd year, breadth subjects: Statistics, Taxation Law

With this way, is it more safer as I actually satisfy the quantitative requirement through QM 1,2, as well as doing the maths, but not to the highest level?

I put the breadths into the course plan guide so it will look like this:

Enough of this, I'm off to bed. Thanks
