USEFUL vce subject?

Hey all!

Current year 11 here needing some advice on what subject to pick up. I'm planning to drop my current bludge, psych 1+2 at the end of this term bc (warning: unpopular opinion) I find it boring as hell. I'll need to pick up a new subject in term 3 and idk what to pick.

It'll end up being a bludge subject either way (as I already have 6 subjects) so I'm not fussed about workload or difficulty. BUT I'd like to pick a subject which is useful and applicable to general day-to-day life, which isn't something you can say about most VCE subjects (except maybe food studies? My school doesn't run it tho so it's not an option anyway).

So my question: What's a useful subject I could pick up for the rest of the year? Useful as in, it teaches me about society and how to become a proper functional human being and all that jazz.

Thanks so much!

ETA - right now, I'm sorta juggling between legal studies, further math, and maybe economics? Open to all suggestions though.

Have a look at the Philosophy and Health and Human Development study designs. Both subjects can provide you knowledge that sets you up for life.

+ Business Management (Arguably)
+ English Language
+ Legal Studies

r u sure u wanna drop Psych ?

stick with it trust me . . . even though I haven't done 1/2
I've picked up 3/4 this year and it's super interesting . . .the only reason I didn't pick up 1/2 was cause . .. yea it looks boring
Psychs a super rewarding subject in 3/4  :)

However looking at your other options,  legal studies I reckon would help you be a functional member of society and I've heard that it is an extremely interesting subject . . . if you're interested in that type of content.

Further maths also teaches u basic math skills (finance) also useful in society . . . although people have said it's an 'easy' subject and complain that at times it gets tedious and boring . . .

Good Luck with your subject hunting!

I would recommend either health or further for useful subjects.
Health teaches a lot of skills about how to stay healthy throughout life (i.e. making choices relating to diet and behaviours such as alcohol consumption, smoking, etc., interpreting health information, development, the healthcare system, etc.) which, in my opinion, are really usefull skills to use throughout life to ensure that you live in a healthy way.
Further, like Ionic Doc said, provides skills that are really useful for everyone, especially the financial topic, which you can use in the future to get the most out of things like loans and superannuation, etc.
Health does have a significantly heavier workload than further, however both have information that is generally easy enough to understand and interpret, and of course apply to life.

I have a friend that does legal and eco, and the content seems pretty interesting, and definitely applicable to life.
Check out the study designs for all of the subjects that you are interested in, and maybe even research some of the content that you would learn to get an idea of how useful it would be!
Good luck!

Hey there!

I didn't do Psych 1/2 but went straight into 3/4 and talking about 'useful subjects' I could not recommend it any more, I would definitely encourage you to try out 3/4, you learn about things that are very applicable to your experiences in Year 12, and things you can carry into the rest of your life. It is an incredibly rewarding, amazing, wonderful subject, I think you should try it out, if you look at the study design and talk to people, 1/2 is worlds away from 3/4. It's pretty unnecessary and can be dry but 3/4 is FANTASTIC.

But if you're still against trying it out, then might I suggest HHD or Legal. I know a lot of people who absolutely love HHD and someone who found it a relatively easy transition into 3/4, and apparently it's fairly approachable, and another person talks about legal being her fav subject, but views on subjects are super subjective, best bet is to talk to teachers and check out the study design and see if the material is up your alley.

All the best for your subject endeavours! Let us know what you decide and if you have any more questions! 😊

Out of interest, have you considered simply not picking anything else up at all?

Can't necessarily comment on subjects I didn't do, but of those I did:
* Business Management: probably useful if you're looking to get into the business field but even then, has limited relevance IMO.
* English Language: can literally apply content to day-to-day life, every single day, but only if you want to.
* Further Maths: was useful IMO. Didn't hugely enjoy it, though.
* HHD: pretty interesting real-life applications even though there's a decent chunk of theory.
* Psychology: won't comment much because you're dropping it, but was one of my favourite subjects.
* VCD: would not recommend if you're looking for a "bludge".

P.S. Have a flick through the VCE subject reviews! Might be of assistance. :)

@Joseph41
Yep I agree with you on VCD! Right now I'm only doing 1+2 and it's one my most workload-heavy subject.

Blows my mind when people choose it expecting it to take no effort! Definitely the subject I invested the most time into through VCE (and ended up being my worst study score lol).
