Switching to Bio or HHD

So after a lot of thought,  a lot

I'm thinking of switching from spec to either BIO or HHD
- This year I can either do HHD and Pick up further next year
or
- Do bio this year and pick up HHD next year.

I'm just a bit skeptical of picking up bio because word of mouth says that the content is super heavy and all. I am doing 3/4 Psych this year and people did say the same thing for it, but I genuinely seem to enjoy psych and my recent sac was 92%. Also I am 100% going into medicine after high school so that is also another motive.

Reason I didn't pick up bio at the start of this year was because in year 10 I got shit scores on pedigrees and dna/ traits ( which I also found hella boring) but was getting high 80's on membrane and evolutions tasks.

Is bio anything like Psych , more or less enjoyable

What are your thoughts.

I haven't done HHD, but i'm currently doing 3/4 bio now and it is definitely a heavy work load. There is quite a lot to remember, and with concepts you really need to be able to apply them not just memorise. A good amount is also experimental design, and being able to come up with pracs and being able to make good observations to later be analysed in depth. I don't find the subject to difficult (everyone is different), but I think the difficulty comes from the work load and the shear amount of content you have to work through. I still find it quite enjoyable, unit 4 i'm not looking forward to with all the DNA stuff and evolution (is kinda of boring to me) , but unit 3 has been really interesting with it being microbiology.

Seeing as your doing psychology and chemistry, you would already have a few things that would help you in the subject. I also think it is quite doable for going into 3/4 without 1/2. I skipped unit 2 and there is barely anything in that that is useful for 3/4. Unit 1 is was very helpful for unit 3! My teacher went over it again but they also kind of repeat some in unit 3 study design.
Since you trying to get into med, I Highly recommend doing biology. I have spoken to a few people who did med with out bio and they did regret it. It is still very doable, but having biology would make your life easier.
Hope this helps.

Hey Geoo

Thanks for the valuable advice

I should be able to manage the heavy workload next year along with chemistry.
And yeah, cause I'm aiming for med, it only makes sense to do biology . ..

Once again thnx, nice journal btw

Biology is indeed quite content heavy, and it is quite advisable to be focussing on that subject consistently in order to keep up with everything. I do not know much about HHD, but it sounds more like biology but from a more practical and human-systems-oriented course. Both sound valid on paper for a medical degree to me.

I am also someone who's interested in going into medical school, but I am not doing HHD. I'm doing both Psych 3/4 and Bio 3/4 this year as my accelerated subjects, and I can testify that Psych does not have all that much content, especially compared to biology. Psych vs. bio is like comparing a cat and a lion's worth of content.

Don't worry about the pedigrees and genetics part. Most students found that quite a challenging topic last year, myself included. Genetics aren't really addressed in the same vein as 1/2, and you'd more be looking at evolution holistically rather than in small families.

Hey Dashnog, thanks for your insight  :D

Psych isn't that bad right now, but looking at the bio study design ( there is a lot to know ). However aiming for med, it only makes sense to bio, which is why I've made the switch.
I'm just a bit anxious about year 12 as I seem to be doing content heavy subject ( chem, bio , hhd) but should be manageable.

Good luck with Psych and Bio :D
