so I have a language analysis sac coming up next week and I would like some advice on what points I can focus on in my essay to get the best mark I can achieve.  I have already written one practise essay (without being timed) however I have not yet received feedback for it. idealistically I would love getting an A+ but I know that this area of work is one of my weakest. any tips welcome!

I find that language analysis is quite structural.

First Paragraph:
Introduce context.
Introduce the article, author, audience, tone, arguments, etc.

Body Paragraphs:
Always introduce tone and provide evidence.
I personally choose to structure paragraphs by argument, so make sure you break up the article by arguments.
Provide 3-4 techniques for evidence.
For each technique: 1-2-3 method.
1. Identify the technique
2. Explain why and how the author uses it
2. Explain the intended effect on the audience "the use of [technique] creates an appeal to justice and thus positions the audience..." etc.
Link paragraph back to the argument and the contention.

Conclusions:
Basically conclude and provide an overview of the arguments.
Refer to the author's position/status if possible and it's intended effects on the reader.

It depends on what you find hard in the task. Is it finding the arguments? Analysing the arguments? Finding techniques? Breaking down the effect on the reader? The structuring of the paragraphs?

Without knowing this, and given the challenges that many of our students face, I would suggest working on your choice of verbs when analysing the piece. For example, instead 'the author argues that blah blah blah', are there are more exciting verb than 'argues'? Could the author be attacking, belittling, praising, confirming, etc? (see my verb charts here: https://buff.ly/2ZowNVK)

I have a playlist here of video about the task if you're interested :) https://buff.ly/2XeRwZF

Hope this helps!

Hi Failingvce,

Adding onto rkjthguakj's point, I would also recommend watching Lisa's Study Guides "VCAA 2016 Language Analysis Exam with Me" series on YouTube! I was watching these videos a little while ago to understand the structure of my student's exam (I'm a QCE student so I have to research the structure/syllabi/requirements of each individual state or territory) and I honestly helped me so much! It is a seven-part series so I would recommend watching specific parts if you have identified your weakness in the Language Analysis SAC or the whole thing (if you're extremely desperate). I have linked the video below if you are interested in watching the video series: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WDG2krYrWn4&feature=emb_rel_pause

I would also recommend reading through Lisa Study Guide's "The Ultimate Guide to VCE Language Analysis" blog post as well. The blog post has honestly helped me so much consolidate the information that I need to know to help my students as much as possible, without leading them on an unnecessary tangent. I have linked the blog post below if you are interested in reading the blog: https://www.vcestudyguides.com/blog/the-ultimate-guide-to-vce-language-analysis?utm_source=YouTube&utm_medium=video&utm_campaign=YouTube

Hopefully, this helps :)

Have a great week and kind regards,

Darcy Dillon.

thank you for the advice! Unfortunately, I have already sat my SAC online and I don't think it went too great! luckily our teachers are making us do a validation task because of bad experiences across the board but I'm still not convinced! so let's see how it goes!
