Hmm, I agree about it being a bit pointless. Although it does feel pretty good to get $140 worth of books :)

Appianway: Do you know who got Physics and Methods? Initials is good... :)
~I thought you would get Physics... :(

And I don't think it's completely pointless... It's appreciation of hard work. That has to count for something. :)

It also adds weight to your valete; I'd imagine it's satisfying seeing yourself with about eight lines of achievements, and everyone else with about two.  >.>

@ Twelve_Steps, I did get physics :) No clue who got methods - apparently there were three people all sitting on 97, so it'll probably boil down to teacher preference for that.

I guess it does reflect hard work throughout the year, but sometimes it causes divisions where there shouldn't be any. I know that a lot of people get really worked up about the awards (a lot of people don't, but there's certainly a sizeable population who do!), and there's the fact that the top 5 students at our school are much closer in ability than what's recognised in the awards. They do reflect the work of the student who ultimately gets the prize, but often they don't congratulate those who don't. I know that last year there were 3 girls in our year level who were so close to tying dux that they thought they'd have to give it as a three way award (there ended up being a spacing of like 0.01 or 0.02, or something in that vicinity), but the two girls who didn't get the prize weren't recognised as having an almost identical achievement.

Hmm I agree, it is pretty unfair with subject awards. Those people who are in the top 3 of each subject are of almost identical achievement but they get no recognition. And I agree with Polky, most of the time, the subject award winners do not get the highest study score. I bet that will be with me and Chem this year, seriously have to be a freak to get good in Chem... =(
