Commuting to Monash Uni

Hey there, I'm considering studying at Monash in the future, and something I was thinking about is the commute (I live about a 50 min drive/2 hour public transport ride away).  Are there any students here that are in a similar living situation? If so, what does your commute to university normally look like (pre-covid19, ofc) and what would you say the pros and cons are?

Hey, I know I don't go to Clayton campus, however I went there a couple of times pre-Covid, and it roughly took me 1h45ish to get there by PT, comparable to 50mins-1.5h (depending on my route) for Parkville. You're not alone

A pro is that you have heapsssss of time (if it's not crowded) to bring out a laptop and do stuff. On a long drive, you could also have a lecture running on audio (idk how you can do that, I'm a peasant wrt to driving because I got my L's at the end of first year and only used it twice since.)

A con is that delays on PT/roads are inevitable, and I find myself having to plan for the what-ifs.

In first year I used to commute 3 hours each way and for me it was absolutely worth it to study my course but it was definitely draining (my trip back was: 601 bus> metro train > v line > bus / walk). I had 4 8am classes and 1 9am - I don't recommend doing that if you can avoid it and have a long commute).

I went down to about same time as insanipi to Clayton and on metro which was much better and then eventually to a sharehouse near campus.


Advice for long commutes:
- bring lunch or know where you'll buy it
- make sure you don't forget things
- get all your assessed work done on campus before returning home
- if taking ptv learn what time train gets you a seat so you can study/work on the train

Woah, 3 hour commute to an 8am sounds rough Props to you for sticking to it
