Hey guys,

After some thorough reconsideration, I decided that it would be best to stay in my current state (Queensland) rather than travelling interstate for university. While the current state of COVID-19 in NSW was considered to be a factor in my decision, for the first time, I actually listened to what my gut feeling was telling me (which is scarce in itself). I'm not usually one to take risks - I'm usually the type of person who just follows the lead of others, but when I was reconsidering my decision to move interstate, I realised how passive my thought process and mindset was.

Instead of thinking about what would be best for me, I ultimately decided to pursue the thought process of "if my sister is able to move overseas for university, then I can too" which is entirely false by the way. Regardless of whether I like it or not, I'm still overly dependent and attached to my parents even as a nearly-adult, "coming of age" and maturing woman. My current feelings of transitioning into adulthood are extremely daunting to admit on a public internet forum, so please bear with me as I do have to confess that I'm scared of growing up.

Personally speaking, my desire to "never grow up" may have been due to some underlying fear or anxiety about who I am as a person or whether I'll ever be good enough to make my parents proud. For some reason, I often imagine my fear of growing up to be similar to the physical and metaphorical journey of all of the characters in J.M. Barrie's Peter Pan.   Regardless of their current mindsets, dreams or desires, each and every character in Peter Pan were shaped and influenced by some form of conflict, setting or even those around them - protagonist or antagonist. 

If you wanted, we could compare our lives and how we learn and grow from past mistakes to the structure of a bildungsroman - a genre that focuses on not only the psychological and moral growth of an individual from youth to adulthood but also focuses on how the individual has changed or adapted over time. But my point is, before I ramble on for too much longer, is that similar to the characters in J.M. Barrie's Peter Pan, I was also shaped and influenced by not only my gut feeling but also, the advice of those around me. Without their advice, I would be stuck in a continuous loop of self-doubt, insecurity and anxiety, so I would like to thank them greatly for their help.

So without further ado, below is my edited and more-thought out version of my previous start to my University Journey Journal, which I hope enables me to consider my future choices wisely and live my life the best that I can:

If you don't know me already, I'm Darcy Dillon (also known as s110820 on the forums) and I'm officially a graduate of the QCE Class of 2020! As a QCE student, I studied Biology, General Mathematics, English, Modern History, Literature and Digital Solutions (which was the subject I dropped in Year 11 because of reasons). I did also try to start a QCE Journal a little while ago but it never really went anywhere so I was hoping that maybe this university journal could motivate me just a teeny tiny bit more.

As the title suggests, I am currently dwelling in the limbo-like feeling of anticipation and uncertainty as I await my final results, my ATAR and my university acceptances. I have also rethought what I would like to do with my life and how I should live my life by changing my preferences to what feels best for me, and not any other external pressure. As of now, my current QTAC preferences are:

1.  Bachelor of Education (Primary) - QUT
2. Bachelor of Education (Primary and Special Education) - ACU
3. Bachelor of Educational Studies - ACU
4. Bachelor of Education (Primary) - ACU
5. Bachelor of Education (Primary and Secondary) - ACU
6. Diploma of Social and Psychological Science/Bachelor of Social Work - Griffith.

I have also received an offer for what was my first preference, the Bachelor of Educational Studies (ACU), during the first offer round which I have conditionally accepted just in case. However, I'm hoping that I can receive an offer for the Bachelor of Education (Primary) - QUT, during the January 14th offer round (which also happens to be my birthday which is kinda daunting when I think about it).

Similarly, to K.Smithy's amazing University Journey Journal (please check it out if you haven't), my University Journey Journal may also be a very long journal as I'm planning to do two undergraduate degrees (yes, you heard me right). Do I know anyone who has studied two undergraduate degrees other than Waleed Aly? Nope. Am I totally crazy for planning to study two undergraduate degrees? Probably. But as I said before, I would like to live my life to the fullest and for me, learning and growing as an individual (especially through education), is what matters most to me.

So, you may be wondering, what would this look like?

Bachelor of Education (Primary): 4 years.
Bachelor of Behavioural Science (Psychology)/Bachelor of Social Work: 5 years.
Master of Education (Inclusive Education Specialisation): 1-1.5 years (Full Time) or 2-3 years (Part-Time)
Doctor of Education (QUT): 3 years (Full Time) or 6 years (Part-Time).

It may sound like a lot, but I'm willing to put in stamina, effort, grit and determination to be where I want to be and be who I want to be in the future. Similarly, when I was younger, I always dreamed of studying abroad somewhere in Europe, maybe even for a Doctoral degree to broaden my horizons. The two places I had in mind were Finland, which is notably one of the best countries in the world in terms of education or England, where I fell in love with the idea of going to Cambridge or Oxford University.

Yes, despite my slightly-average ATAR results, attending Cambridge or Oxford university may have been a bit out of reach for me in terms of an undergraduate degree and coincidentally, the pandemic. But I'm hopeful that one day, maybe someday, I could pursue my dream of attending either of those universities. It's definitely an ambitious dream of mine, but I'm sure that if I prioritise my health, try my best and work as hard as I can, then my ambitions can be achieved.

Overall, I'm pretty excited to start the next chapter in my life but at the same time I'm also still pretty anxious about growing up and learning to be more independent from my parents (whom I love dearly, but I also don't want to seem like a parasite to them). It may be a bit of a long journey, but as I said, I'm sure I'll get there.

Hey guys,

I'm so sorry for my prolonged absence - I've been dealing with a lot lately, both online and in real life, so sometimes updating this journal has been hard for me in the long run. But a lot of exciting stuff has happened to me in the past thirty days (yes, it's been that long lmao) or so that I would like to talk about:

- I received my unexpected ATAR result. Throughout my last year of high school, my predicted ATAR was always in the late fifties to the mid-sixties, which did kinda deflate me to be honest because I struggled a lot this past year and tried as much as I could to receive the best results that I could and guess what? Instead of receiving a 58 or a 65, my ATAR result was 70.20 which was honestly so unexpected and surreal for me.

- I received an offer for my original first preference at ACU. During the first offer round (the 23rd of December I think??) I received an offer for the Bachelor of Educational Studies at ACU which I conditionally accepted as I eagerly and anxiously awaited the next (main) offer round.

- I received an offer for my first preference at QUT. After I received my ATAR, there was a long and anticipated wait until my main offer round, January 14th, which just happened to be my birthday and to my surprise, I got an offer for my dream course, the Bachelor of Education (Primary) at QUT! *squeals*

- Unfortunately, I didn't get a job at ATAR Notes as I hoped but I'm going to use this as a learning experience. I applied for two jobs at ATAR Notes - a tutor at TuteSmart and a writer for the ATAR Notes book collections but I didn't get the job. But while I was a little bit heartbroken at first, I realised that this is just a life experience for me. In reality, I'm not going to get an offer for every job that I apply for, and that's okay. As long as I get back up again and try again, that's all that matters the most to me.

- I'm now officially a QLD Moderator for ATAR Notes! *screams in Swedish* I'm honestly so grateful and fortunate to have this opportunity and I can't wait to get started as soon as I can and update the QCE English and QCE History forums with some new ideas!

- I've also been applying to some jobs as I don't really enjoy my current job, to be honest, so I would really love to share my passion for learning and teaching. I applied to a tuition place called Cluey Learning, but unfortunately, I didn't get a job offer so I applied elsewhere at Alchemy Tuition, where they have reviewed my application and would like me to join them for a ten-minute online interview soon! I'm really excited about this opportunity and I really do hope it goes well

I think I covered everything (slightly significant) that has happened in my life in the past thirty days or so, but if I do happen to remember something else, I'll definitely update this post as well. I also think it's worth mentioning that after I watched the heartbreaking Netflix series The Trials of Gabriel Fernandez, I kinda had a eureka moment. While I am definitely passionate about providing education to others, especially those who are experiencing hardships, at the same time, I'm also really passionate about helping others through their tough times.

I was originally planning to do a Bachelor of Education (Primary) at QUT and then do a Bachelor of Behavioural Science (Psychology/Bachelor of Social Work at QUT but now, I'm not too sure anymore. Does anyone have any advice about what I should do in this situation? Should I do both degrees or should I transfer from one degree to the other? If you do have any advice, please let me know

So technically, I am kinda in a pickle right now as I have enrolled in the Bachelor of Education (Primary) at QUT and I'm about to register for my classes on the 2nd of February which should be interesting but I'll definitely update you then!

I've also registered for a lot of QUT events such as the kickSTART program, the campus tour and the QUT orientation for Primary Ed students and also, my online interview for Alchemy Tuition is the third of February so please wish me luck as I'm extremely anxious and slightly terrified, to be honest.

I’m back with a slightly sad update: I had the interview for Alchemy Tuition today and I didn’t get the job. I’m slightly disappointed in myself, especially this is my third time (un)lucky. While I’m trying not to beat myself up over this too much, I still have the desire to move forward - yes it’s disappointing, but there’ll always be an opportunity waiting for me and maybe, this wasn’t the right one for me.

Either way, I’ve already applied at Studiosity as a “Feedback Writer” and at Elevate Education/Coaching as a “Mentor” so hopefully, it’ll go okay

On a brighter note, I also forgot to mention that I have my timetable for uni (yay!). Here are my classes for Semester 1 at QUT:

About the job, it’s pretty natural to have a number of unsuccessful interviews. I had that happen for both part time and full time jobs. Keep going, and remember that if you’re getting interviews, you’re still doing something right. It’s usually the first job that is the most difficult to obtain.

Hi there,
Let me just tell you it is okay to be disappointed when I first graduated I applied to multiple tutoring companies and got rejected, it broke me. But right before term 2 (it was actually ANZAC day), I got offered a job with better working conditions than the companies I previously applied for (close to home, better pay, more flexibility in hours)
And then at the start of the second year, I applied for three jobs in January, had three interviews in the span of two days and received job offers from all 3 (and was able to choose the best job for me)
I know it is a cliche, but everything happens for a reason and as you mentioned the interview experience will definitely be helpful for future applications.
You have a strong passion for teaching and any employer will be lucky to have you, you got this!
Have you also considered private tutoring, especially for primary students I am sure you might be able to sell yourself!

This isn’t really an “update” per say, rather it’s more of an outline of the goals that I would like to achieve before, during and after my first university degree:

Academics:

During my Bachelor of Education (Primary), I would like to achieve and pursue:

* In terms of grades, I would like to achieve at least a credit (65-74%) to a distinction (75-84%) but of course, it would be my absolute dream to achieve a high distinction (85-100%) at some point during my degree. If you have received distinctions or high distinctions throughout your university degrees, I would love to hear some advice from you guys

* The Executive Dean’s Scholars Program (Education).
    - The program is designed for undergraduate students who have satisfied course requirements to the end of year 3 of full-time study in education.
    - What I’ll receive:
        - recognition in the form of a certificate,
        - $100 book voucher,
        - access to the Library’s Researchers’ Centre,
        - invitation to Faculty of Education Research seminars and events.
    - The benefits of the program:
        - expanded understanding of various disciplines,
        - develop and expand academic networks.
        - first hand experience in a research environment.
    - Eligibility:
        - Must be currently enrolled in Bachelor of Education (Primary)
        - Have completed three years equivalent study (288 credit points).
        - Have passed every semester of study from commencement.

After my Bachelor of Education (Primary), I would like to achieve and pursue:

* The QUT Rhodes Scholarship.
        - Requirements: have an indicative expectation of a GPA of at least 6.75/7, a weighted average mark of 80%, or equivalent in my degree.
        - Meet the entry requirements for your proposed course at Oxford University.
        - The selection panel also look for applicants who demonstrate:
            - academic achievement and excellence, ambition for impact, clarity of purpose and intrinsic motivation,
            - a commitment to make a difference in the world, contributing to the greater good,
            - the courage and skills required to lead with a wider desire for the public good.
        - As part of the application, I must submit:
            - a completed academic form
            - declaration addressing the eligibility criteria
            - birth certificate or passport
            - official documentation to prove your citizenship or residence status.

   - Apply for a QUT exchange program either in England, Finland or Sweden (must research Unis there)
   - Apply for a postgraduate degree at Oxford or Cambridge university.

* Gain work experience nationally and internationally
   - In the second year of my course, I can receive credit when participating in a short-term international program by taking elective EUB011: Community Engagement in International, Rural and Remote.
    - Semester exchange program in either England, Finland or Sweden (not sure how these processes in QUT work so I’ll keep researching it and I’ll update this thread with the relevant information and stepping stones to achieve my goals).

Those are all of my academic goals for now, but I’ll definitely update this thread if anything changes. And I do understand that these goals are extremely ambitious, especially as it’ll take a lot of hard work to achieve my dreams, but I’m willing to put in the effort and the energy. But of course, I’ll also definitely be prioritising my health as well, as I neglected to do so last year.

Thank you so much for believing in me and my goals - you’ve honestly got no idea how much it means to me (hint: it means the world to me). And you’re right! There’s definitely been a trend in England/European countries recently (and in my goals) but to answer your question, here’s what drew me to these places in particular and why they have a special place in my heart:

- England: Ever since I was younger I had my heart set on attending a prestigious university such as Cambridge or Oxford! I know it’s a slightly weird ambition to have as a kid but I fell in love with London, the surrounding towns and the beautiful landscape of the Cotswalds, so I’m thinking it could be my “forever” home.

- Finland: Similarly, my passion for making education more accessible and helping others be the best they can be (both academically and personally) encouraged me to look elsewhere in terms of how they value education and what they do to ensure both personal and academic success from Day 1 (hint: it’s Number 1 in the world for education!). That’s why I love Finland so much - they value and enrich lives with education, not just doing it for the sake of doing it if that makes sense.

- Sweden: While I was born in Ireland, I went to Förskola (what they call kindergarten in Sweden) at Stockholm International School, which while I don’t remember much of it, from looking at all of the pictures I had in my big scrapbook/binder thing, it honestly looked really fun. I guess the reason why I want to visit Sweden so much again, is that I would like to connect with my roots. While no one in my family is Swedish per say (except for my younger sister who was born in Sweden), growing up in Sweden was a big part of my life and I would really love to reconnect with my roots and explore Sweden once again.

Thanks so much for your suggestion! I’ll definitely look into it. However, I’m actually planning to do two undergraduate degrees (Bachelor of Education (Primary) and Bachelor of Behavioural Science (Psychology)/Bachelor of Social Work at QUT) so depending on which road I eventually decide to travel on (e.g. such as whether I would like to do one or two undergraduate degrees), a postgraduate degree abroad can also be an option as well! Hey guys,

Long time no see! I'm really sorry that I haven't been able to update this journal as much as I would have liked - I've been pretty busy with uni and my mental health has taken a toll on me and I'm still kinda struggling so updating my uni journal wasn't my number one priority during that time.

But to lighten the mood a bit, I got a few assessment results back and here's what I got:

EUB104 - Stepping In (which is basically like an introductory course to teaching & education): Grade 5 - Credit.

This was the first assessment result that I received and to say that I was disheartened would be a bit of an understatement. EUB104 is pretty much one of my favourite units and I worked my ass off with this assignment so I was a little bit disappointed in myself, especially as I was aiming for a Grade 6 - Distinction.

But after I talked to my parents about it, I realised that it is only my first semester of uni and I still have so much time to learn and grow as a student. So as of now, I'm actually pretty proud of my result - achieving distinctions isn't easy, especially as a first-year student so getting this grade and nearly being where I want to be has really encouraged me to push myself further.

EUB102 - Education & Society (which is basically like a course about how society and contextual factors affect education and impact student learning/development): Multiple Choice Quiz - 8/10.

I'm actually pretty proud of this result to be honest. I've never really been great with multiple choice as I prefer to do long responses so this result was actually a bit of a surprise to me. While I did study for this exam and completed all of the practice questions provided, I ended up panicking during the quiz because I had a mind blank and only ten or so minutes to complete the quiz so I honestly thought that I was going to fail this quiz but I guess not

I haven't received any other assessment results back yet, but I should get them all back by the end of this week. While I can't say too much about my assessment, here's a quick little overview of what I'm doing at the moment:

EUB101 - Supporting Innovative Pedagogy with Digital Technologies (which is basically a course about how we can use digital technologies in the classroom): group presentation with written reflection.

My group and I just had a group meeting where we were actually pretty productive and got a lot done. We've chosen our content descriptor from the Australian Curriculum, linked it to a general capability and a cross-curriculum priority and we're in the process of creating our digital learning pedagogy/prototype to present to our class.

EUB102 - Education & Society: Long-Response Exam.

Pretty self-explanatory but I'm currently studying for my upcoming long response exam using the practice questions provided, spaced repetition and active recall!

EUB103 (Culture Studies: Indigenous Education): Portfolio

This is actually a pretty big assessment as it is divided into three parts: the community snapshot, the practice plan and the engagement plan.

In the community snapshot, I need to:
- Research an Australian Indigenous community
- Trace their history using Anglo-Saxon and Indigenous perspectives
- Explain my cultural position
- Explain my relationship to this community (and its First Nation peoples)
- Analyse the reliability and usefulness of the sources that I used.

In the practice (lesson) plan, I need to:
- Choose a content description from the Australian curriculum
- Identify the First Nations content I would teach.
- Identify at least one resource that I would use to teach this First Nations content.
- Explain the culturally responsive teaching strategies I would use.
- Explain why these are appropriate teaching, curriculum and resource choices.
- Explain how my teaching, resource and curriculum choices will work.
- Support your choices with scholarly literature.

In the engagement plan, I need to:
- Identify a First Nations, or First Nations-affiliated, organisation, role or network.
- Identify why you would contact this entity and how you would approach this entity.
- Draft an introduction to this entity.

EUB104 - Stepping In: Responses to Policy

Essentially, I need to respond to a stimulus provided in class for three case studies (learners, pedagogy & curriculum) using the 4R's framework (Report and Respond, Relating (connections between reflection and self), Reason (connection between the reflection and the theory) & Reconstruct (connection between the reflection and your future practice/views). Each week I need to write a 500 word response which I will then compile into one document for submission.

That's about it in terms of my assessment but in terms of my social life, I'm kinda struggling a bit to be honest. I mean it doesn't really help that I'm an introvert with social anxiety but I'm finding the whole social life aspect really hard so if anyone does have any advice on how I can work on this, I would really appreciate it

I've also applied to a few jobs as well! Ever since my avalanche of rejections, I've been keen to find a job so I applied to the OSHC at my local primary school and I've never heard back from them. I also asked a few local businesses if they were hiring to no avail so I'm back to square one so hopefully I can find something soon. Maybe I could apply for a position as a freelance editor or something in that area? I'm kinda stuck on ideas to be honest.

I also applied to the Faculty Academic Board at uni as an undergraduate representative so I'm really hoping that it'll work out. I'll also apply for a few volunteering opportunities too as I would really love to pay it forward.

Hey again!

I just got another assessment result back and this time, it's for my EUB102 - Education & Society unit group presentation! For this assessment, I received a grade of 5 (Credit)! I'm actually pretty stoked with this grade to be honest. As someone who has a tendency to cry either before, during or after their presentation due to nervousness and anxiety, I think I did pretty well to be honest (surprise: I didn't end up breaking down - instead, I was pretty composed).

And I know that my group members probably won't see this but if they do, I would just like to thank them for being the best team ever! I'm really proud of all of you and good luck for your upcoming assessment too

I'm also pretty keen for next semester so much so that I bought myself a digital notebook bundle (five notebooks in total) and a digital planner as well (oops). As you can probably tell already, one of the goals that I'm working towards for next semester and beyond is to improve my time management/organisation and reduce my procrastination. While I did (kinda) have an organisation system in place, throughout the semester, I have come to realise that it isn't really working for me so I'm going to change that up a bit for next semester as well.
