But then again its all about ranking. If they are better than you=you get lower ranking.
And yeh, teaching really is the best way to learn IMO, as long as you have a rough understanding of it first of course.
So true, there can be no better way to learn.

I don't usually tell people my marks (I ticked the damn "don't publish in newspaper" box but they published my scores anyway >_>) so my friends can't compete with me ^_^

Competition is healthy when it pushes you to strive for your best. It's unhealthy when you deliberately try to sabotage them in order to look good.

I find competing with my friends will only lead me to massive depression as they are fukn light years ahead of me in terms of skill at every single subject (TT and /0), so yeh I just give up. I havent even beat them in a test...once. At least I have one I can reliably beat, except once he beat me and shoved it in my face ><

Depends on the friends LOL. I have some friends who are really slack, and some other friends who are super smart and just kick my ass in every subject. But I can live with that. What I'd be pretty shattered by though is one of my friends from the slack category beating me. R.I.P my ego.

You know, believe it or not, there's more to life than a school-based ranking.  :)

I find it helps to remember that - because ultra-competitiveness can ruin friendships; and I personally value friendship more than a number rank. As long as I perform to the best of my abilities - numbers, or others' achievements, ain't got nothing on me! :)

I compete with this one friend(secretly) in general maths but this only started cos she got higher than me on a matrices sac, it was like the first time she got a higher score(i usually get full marks, it is general maths btw) than me in regards to sacs or tests and she had to rub it in by saying "i beat you". She hasn't got higher than me since.

This is just a curious little thought which I've been toying with...
School can be likened to a mark-system, analogous to a class-system. You have the people who are expected to ace everything, those who are expected to just do average, and those who are expected to do horribly.
If you try to move from your mark it can take a while for other people to get used to it, since it is always more comforting to keep a status quo. And so if you're in the process of transitioning, it can be easy to build rivalries and hard to maintain friendships, unless they are strong friendships.

Thats why in pokemon red/blue, gary is ur rival. See gary expected you to wake up late and get that shitty like yellow blob of crap like the anime, but in pokemon blue/red, you perform alot better and get an actual pokemon like charmander. This sparks gary's jealousy and causes a long rivalry which finishes with you KOing his pidgeot despite how sik it looks in the elite four match which although sounds like your vsing 4, you actually vs 5 >< (This was inspired by the startup screen of pokemon blue/red where oak asks "so what about your rival, what is his name")

Wow, what an interesting analogy... I'm going to sound like a total valley girl here, but to me there's one crucial difference between a "mark system" and a "class system", which (again, this is only a personal opinion!) prevents any serious damage to friendships: a class system is more overt, a mark system more covert. Particularly given the sensitivity teachers often display around divulging marks etc, there are fewer "giveaways" to a lower "mark" status than there are to a lower class status (accent, dress, education etc). So often friendships are formed in complete obliviousness to each friend's mark status, and "class shifts" can also be invisible. (also, I imagine intelligent people tend to befriend other intelligent people already - thus there's an expectation of rough equality between the abilities of both people.)
