I would also like to know about this but for Melbourne high.
How are the teachers at mhs generally?
Some are really really lazy and seem like they are just at school to survive before their retirement, other teachers are brilliant and really are invested in your learning (maths psych and eco departments!)
Are there any specific teachers I should look out for?Don't want to name names in terms of negative teachers. I really liked Mr Ong as a psych teacher, I think Mr Levick was brilliant and amazing for being head of methods (The SACs were really good and he made us finish the course by August so we had plenty of time for revision). If you ever see an old man that has a shiny bald head walk around school thats flanno probably every student's (pre his retirement) favourite teacher.
I hear a lot about ‘adult learning environment’ what exactly does that mean?Which ethnicities will be at mhs?Mostly South Asian, Middle Eastern or East Asian ethnicity. There actually is a surprisingly high number of Anglo or Eastern European people (still in the minority though).
Which subjects are most enjoyable? In year 9 and 10 go for the easiest subjects (electives) with the least amount of workload. In year 9 you can't really choose in year 10 that means doing stuff like music craft (literally just watched brooklyn 99 every lesson), drama and photography (walking out to botanic gardens and taking funny pics with friends). In terms of VCE thats up to you
How was the year 9 camp?Your standard camp but its really rewarding compared to other schools because its only with your own class meaning that most likely year 9 camp is when you first branch out and make friends that aren't just from your old school.
If you went to the trip to Japan, how was it?Which 1&2 subjects can be done in year 10?Only music performance
is there like a ‘formal night’ in year 12?yes
Is everyone super competitive in terms of studying? No especially in year 9 and 10, no one does any work and people really just screw around in class. Come VCE you get in this environment in which the average student would probably be disappointed with a 40 or below in their year 11 subject but generally the cohort is super super supportive and really looks down upon ppl that are toxic. Also in VCE there is still a large number of people who aren't really as invested in their VCE studies because they have more important things going on (maybe a hobby, or their trying to get into a university in America etc.)
What is something that mhs has that other/most schools don’t?Sporting interstate exchanges. We do sporting exchanges with Sydney Boys High School (well used to), North Sydney Boys High School and Adelaide High School. The atmosphere that you get from watching the basketball or futsal or soccer games where the gym or oval is packed with students watching is something that i'll really miss. Also travelling interstate and becoming friends with people from other states and going out with them to their respective cities is a really great experience. Also singing! I know that a lot of students see massed singing as a huge hassle but missing out on speech night in the last two years when you're on stage singing your heart out with 1200 fellow mhs all around you is one of the things i really am sad about in terms of covid casualties. House chorals (house massed singing competition) is really really high quality too and one of my most memorable moments was singing the set song in year 9 for our house (which in my humble opinion was the best house chorals performance i've witnessed out of the three i participated in) and winning house chorals
Are there like ‘relationships’ or not really?yep just like any other school
Everyone is going for med?I would say around a quarter of the students are going for med and around a third or quarter of them will get into med through undergrad
How are the clubs/societies?Really great largely student run so not much support from the school.
Strict uniform? The year level coordinators are really annoying with this but most days you'll get away with wearing whacky uniform
