What about for a BA?

Just like most BA's, not many I presume.

I've always thought medicine and engineering had the most contact hours and arts and commerce had the least at most institutions.

This.

Arts students generally have the least contact, followed closely by Commerce... Science is somewhere in the middle... then at the other end of the spectrum are Medicine and Engineering.

And law is also at the "other end of the spectrum" as well isn't it?

Law isn't too bad for contact hours, but there's a fuckload of reading to do for each class.

Yeah... that's the problem with law.
Contact hours aren't particularly onerous or anything... but the amount of cases and crap you have to read is bleh.

Usually only 3 contact hours a week for each subject, but if you're doing languages that goes up to 5 hours each.

Law isn't too bad for contact hours, but there's a fuckload of reading to do for each class.
Yeah. Only 2 hours a week each subject (3 if you can be bothered going to tutes, and even they don't start until week 6) so even if you were overloading on all law subjects, you might only have 10-15 contact hours a week depending on your slackness.

But you're expected to do 4-5 hours of study for each contact hour (i.e. if you want to do well you pretty much have to do this)

Basically for me this semester:

ESD 2: 3x1 hour lectures & 1x3 hour workshops = 6 hours/week

Physics 2: 3x1 hour lectures, 1x1 hour tutorial & 1x3 hour pracs = 7 hours/week

Linear Algebra: 3x1 hour lectures, 1x1 tutorial and 1x1 computer pracs = 5 hours/week

Finance 1: 2x1 hour lectures & 1x1 hour tutorial = 3 hours/week

Totalling 21 hours/week
2008: Finished VCE

2009 - 2011: Bachelor of Science (Mathematical Physics)

2012 - 2014: Master of Science (Applied Mathematics/Mathematical Physics)

2016 - 2018: Master of Engineering (Civil)

How about IT?

This is for RMIT, but.. this semester I had 16 contact hours, managed to get Fridays off (though on top of that I often skipped some lectures and particular tutes and labs, which means every week was almost always <16 hours). They tend to give you more hours in the tute/labs in first year, first semester. Last semester was about 20 hours, with no days off.

there are so many different class that it's silly to even ask without being more specific. go to the science handbook and look at possible first year subjects and add it up.
