Not getting into a course due to it being "capped"
« on: November 19, 2009, 12:18:52 pm »
Hi there

We all know every course  has a LIMIT on how many people can be accepted.

I was just wondering, what if in a degree for example where it is only offered at 1 or 2 Uni's, there are no more spots left?

I understand that they would then start taking whoever has the highest ENETR, e.g. if clearly in= 80%, they begin taking all those who are in the top range i.e. maybe whoever achieved higher than the clearly in

But it would be really unfair, if somebody who achieved the GUARANTEED ENETR is not accepted aka the lower range people.

Wondering if this has ever happened to anybody on here, or knows a friend who it has happened too, what do you do? Do they hold your palce for next year? Personally I have never heard of a story where this occurs, however looking at the VTAC guide, SO MANY courses have such a limited number of spots.

I don;t think people would go to another Uni do to a course, especially for example if their ENETR is high enough to get into-it at Melbourne or Monash...

I believe the Clearly In ENTER is based on the people who get in anyway, so it's not possible to get a guaranteed ENTER and not get in.

That's why the Clearly In ENTER varies every year due to supply and demand of specific courses :D
so it's not guaranteed ENTER per se...

The ENTER required for a course is determined by the people that apply for it. The top people that apply for a course are the ones that get accepted into a place.

Oh, I think I mean the Guaranteed ENTER.....not the one with second round offers, sorry!

My career teacher from what I udnerstood said, the whole point of doing VTAC preferences early on in the year/August is to help Uni's know what the demand is for the courses so as to meet it with appropriate supply?

Or do you mean the minimum ENTER?  I thought "Guaranteed ENTER" was just another way of saying "Clearly-In".

LOL, now im confused =(

Um, you know how tehres the ENTER you HAVE to get to be accepted straight away? And if you dont achieve this benchmark, you have the middle band one? Where they look at your GAT, SEA's etc, and prop it up, and you mgiht be considered? I am talking about my FIRST example.

The clearly-in ENTERs published in the 2010 VTAC guide are what the 2008 Yr 12s needed to get into the course, not what the 2009 Yr 12s need.

They are calculated (roughly) by the ENTERs of the top ~80% of applicants selected for the course. The next ~20% of applicants fell into the middle band and their ENTERs would have varied and not necessarily been the next top 20% of ENTERs.

You do not yet know the ENTER that will guarantee you entry into your course... it changes every year, depending on demand...

Alright.  Take Commerce at UoM for example:

Last year, the Clearly-In was 95.20.  This means that everyone who applied for Commerce and got an ENTER at 95.20 or above, got into the course.

Then the Fringe ENTER was 92.10.  This means that 95% of the offers were made to applicants who received an ENTER of 92.10+.  So if you got 92.10, it doesn't mean that you are guaranteed entry.  Just tells you the approximate ENTER of 95% of the applicants.

If you ask, my bet is that if you got an ENTER of below 95.20, the only way you could have got in is by SEAS since Commerce at UoM is so popular.
