IMO the difference between 49 and 50, and 99 and 99.05 is just luck: "on the day" sort of thing.
2009
~ Methods (Non-CAS) [48 --> 49.4]

2010
~ Spesh [50 --> 51.6]
~ Physics [50 --> 50]
~ Chem [43 --> 46.5]
~ English [46 --> 46.2]
~ UMEP Maths [5.0]

2010 ATAR: 99.90
Aggregate 206.8

Idk like its also that if everyone could get a high enter like in the 97+ region then im sure people would try. Its just not everyone's cup of tea.

but with yr 12 for me next year, I dont have a mind set of its not possible. More a mind set of I'm going to give it all and study like hell and atleast then ill know I tried.

or is it never enough to know that "atleast you tried". ?

Having an attitude "I can't get a 99.95 why bother" is a recipe for disaster. Having an attitude "I can't get a 99.95, but I am aiming for 94" is a better attitude because you have some form of goal and you aren't throwing in the towel before you start the game.

If you start this year with an attitude that you will give it your all atleast this is some form of positive attitude, but set yourself a goal, this is something that may make you go out of your comfort zone, something that you need to push yourself to get.

In year 12 I had goals such as:

- Maths Methods - I said that I will aim for a 40, my methods teacher told me to aim for something like 35, so I had a desire to prove I could do better. I got 39, so I was happy with that.

- Chemistry - I decided to just have fun, give my best and ask my chemistry teacher what he thought I could get (38 - I got 37 pretty close).

- English - The subject I had the worst attitude for! Basically starting year 12 I was like "I hate English, I'll try and wing it". SAC's would come up and I would be like "Don't know how to prepare for SAC's, I'll do some maths". I got a 30 from having shocking nightmares relating to sitting my exam.

- Physics - I got dux for physics in year 11, had an attitude that getting at least 45 would be easy. Unit 3 was pretty easy and just got more and more confident, unit 4 exam I mucked up from not doing enough practice to avoid making careless mistakes. I got a 39 for physics which I knew I could have done better in if my attitude was different.

- Specialist Maths - Very interesting, yet a very difficult subject. I had an attitude that I would do my best and see how I go attitude. I spent a lot of time on this subject just to be able to have some understanding of the concepts. Got a 33 which wasn't too bad.

My goal was to get into a BSc at Melbourne so I had an attitude that I want a 92 or 93, but only needed an 85. Or as Mick Jagger once said "You can't always get what you want, but if you try sometimes you get what you need".

I agree, TT is amazing - he is very likely to get the magical 99.95 =)

I think it's motivation. You need to believe in yourself and just keep going, without thinking of the result. 99.95 is absolutely impossible to guarantee, because it depends on a wide variety of factors. You need to have luck on the day of the exam, you need to be having a good day, etc. So it doesn't all depend on study. And I agree, you can't really start year 12 thinking you're going to get 99.95.

for 99.95 no amount of studying can help if you're not born with pure genius
99.95 does not require genius.
than u get 99.95

    Most cars can get to 200km/hr, even if some take longer than others to reach that velocity.

I think doing exceptionally well is one thing, but 99.95 is a whole different thing.

It comes down to more than simply wanting to do well.

I actually think one of the biggest factors is support. Some families/cultures place a very high emphasis on educations, as such kids are raised to appreciate doing well, and are supported with extra study, monitoring marks etc by their parents. Others on the other hand are not given as much support. My family for example was more of the "I've paid for education, his teachers will do the rest". For some people they only really study focusing on study in year 11/12 and a lot of the time its a bit too late to "catch up".

But I do admit that "natural ability", hard work and a little bit of luck play a big part.

If you're who I think you are then I think you have a good chance of 99.95. Jan is a awesome teacher ;)

Good Luck!

I studied my VCE at RMIT.

I had her for lit and eng and probably spent about 10 hours a week in her office :)

I was in there a few times when you came by to see her, she speaks very highly of you so I'm sure you'll do well.
