Subject Selection Assistance
« on: December 02, 2009, 12:23:21 am »

Hey guys, my first time posting here. I'm Fred or Freddy. Year 12 next year and I need some help with subject selection and such.

Firstly, just some background information. Next year I hope to do either Arts/Commerce and Commerce/Economics at Monash or, if I get in, Commerce @ Melbourne University. Something along those lines.

Now some background information; this year I did Methods 3/4 - mainly to get it out of the way. I'm expecting low 30s raw and it won't be in my top 4. Next year, so far I've selected English Language, Psychology, PE and Further Maths. I did PE and Psych 1/2s and I enjoyed them so I'm keeping them. I've decided to drop English and take up English Language because my brother did it in 2007 and got a high 40s score and I have her resources and all. I also dislike english so English Language covers up my eng component. And Further I've taken up because I've been told a lot of the mathematics covered in a Business or Commerce degree (correct me if im wrong) is based on statistics and graphs and the likes which is touched upon in Further?

Anyway, thats what I've got so far. My final subject is undecided but I've rounded it down to three business type subjects; Economics, Accounting, Business Management.

I'm unsure about which to select. Economics seems the best choice but I didn't do the 1/2 which may put me as a disadvantage. I feel by choosing this sub I'll be devoting a lot of time to it and I'm not the hardest of workers so that may be time I don't have. Having said that it may help me with commerce in the future and it seems very interesting (the least boring out of all 3).

Accounting I'm sure will also help me with the future in a commerce degree. My brother also did accounting and got a 40s study score so he can help me out with that, but for some reason he keeps telling me not to pick it up cause its really boring or something? Is it hard to do well in accounting?

Finally my last subject is Business Management. This seems the easiest choice as it won't take up too much of my time and from what I understand, you don't need the 1/2 to do well in it. Despite this, I don't see how it will help me much in my future degree and I feel I already have too many subjects which scale down (Psych, PE, Further) so I'll need to work a lot harder to get into the course I want. Its also apparently very competitive.

What I'm mainly looking for is someone who has studied one or more of these subjects and there recommendations on what to choose. The main attribute I'm looking for is (in this order)

(1) whichever one of these is easiest to score well in
(2) Whichever one is most enjoyable
(3) Which will help me most in the future

Thanks for any help given

Didn't read it all, so sorry >< no disrespect to you,  but i g2g!

First thing "I'm Fred, or Freddy"  LMAO, ><
"Hello and welcome"

Ok, enough stupidity, Economics without Unit 1/2 is EASY, um, in my class we had 1/4 not do 1/2 (class of like 12), and basically 80% of Unit 3 >>IS<< Unit's 1 and 2.....its a revision of it.

Unit 4, merely USES what u learnt in Unit 3. Um, when I did 1/2 in year 11 and looked at the textbook in Jan holidays, it freaked me out for "economics" isn't taught in years 7-10 like other countries. HOWEVER, ignore the feeling that its hard! It is really hard to understand when u havent had a class yet or a teacher.

But trust me on this Economics 3/4 is EASY without 1/2. HOWEVR, if u muck about in semester 1 aka unit 3, yes, u will struggle unit 4.

Goodluck

btw sorry about talking about ur intro, but its so unique! I dont see that often >< as u can quickly tell im the immature one on VN at times, enjoy ur time here.

You will be pleased to know not everyone is like me ><

EDIT: Regarding Business Management, tbh i picked Economics over it because I never saw myself owning a business or learning how they run, and quiet frankly i didnt care ><, also the scaling down sort of "topped off" why i chose Economics over it. But thats just ME, i know others will tell u differently

Firstly I would either pick business management or accounting. I say this since I have heard that VCE economics doesn't really relate that much to UoM economics.

Business management would probably be better for you since I'm guessing it's more english than maths than what accounting would be. When you are considering a commerce degree what are hoping to major in?

I'm probably not the best person to recommend which commerce VCE subject to do since I did no VCE commerce subjects.
2008: Finished VCE

2009 - 2011: Bachelor of Science (Mathematical Physics)

2012 - 2014: Master of Science (Applied Mathematics/Mathematical Physics)

2016 - 2018: Master of Engineering (Civil)

Semester 1:[/b] Engineering Mechanics, Fluid Mechanics, Engineering Risk Analysis, Sustainable Infrastructure Engineering

Semester 2:[/b] Earth Processes for Engineering, Engineering Materials, Structural Theory and Design, Systems Modelling and Design

Welcome to VN :)

Accounting I'm sure will also help me with the future in a commerce degree. My brother also did accounting and got a 40s study score so he can help me out with that, but for some reason he keeps telling me not to pick it up cause its really boring or something? Is it hard to do well in accounting?

I didn't do VCE accounting, nor do I do commerce. But I have gone to financial accounting tutorials (it's part of my job) and in a LOT of the topics the tutor would say something along the lines of "Today we are doing... [explains concept] - now this will be revision for those who did VCE accounting, those who didn't will have to work harder".

So I think VCE accounting will help you when you do university accounting (even if you are not choosing to major in it as I believe it's a compulsory subject for first year commerce).

I did business management. In my opinion, it is one of the easier subjects to do well in. I pretty much crammed the revision for it into the 2 days before the exam and I got 48. I think it just requires a lot of rote-learning and regurgitating (though there will be a few people here who will disagree with me!)

I have looked at the 1/2 course (I didn't do it either) and it has almost no relevance to the 3/4 course, so don't worry - you are not disadvantaged at all. And no, it won't help you much in university (from what my friends doing management in commerce atm tell me) but then again a lot of VCE subjects have little relevance in university.

Btw if you score highly it will only get scaled down a tiny bit - my SS got scaled down a grand total of ~0.7 :P

(1) Business Management
(2) Apparently economics is quite interesting. I hated BM and didn't do Accounting but have heard bad things about it
(3) Probably accounting if you're going to do commerce, but it won't give you too much of an advantage so don't let it be the only reason for your choice. Apparently some of the things VCE economics teaches you are simply wrong and completely different to what you learn in university economic (I think Collin Li mentioned this somewhere)

Everyone's advice sounds good, but just letting you know that you can pretty much start a Commerce degree with no VCE knowledge except Methods and you should be fine. :)

I'd say a strong foundation in Maths is a better headstart in Commerce and Economics than any other business subject in VCE (but I haven't done any myself -- but I'm excelling in Commerce at university now?)

Hey Fred

While you seem sure about Commerce now, consider how 'sure' you will be by the end of the year.

A mate of mine was in a similar situation as you.
He was sure he wanted to do Commerce and figured he'd take business subjects.

As most people have suggested I doubt they'll help you much at Uni, but maybe take one to get a feel for Commerce.
At the end of the year though you might change your mind on Commerce.

Because of this I advised (forced!) my mate to take a science because it really opens up a lot of doors for courses.

Also note that subjects like Psychology/Further/Business are very competitive. I know a lot of students who chose them because they figured "this subject is easy I'll get 40+ easy". Keep in mind though that just a few marks lost on exams can mean a huge loss on study scores.

Ever tried. Ever Failed. No matter. Try again. Fail again. Fail better
