Benefits of student exchange for the future...

Hello

Yes, another question, I am just wondering...i go overseas for a student exchange

• Would you put it on your resume in future that u studied overseas?
• What are the BENEFITS/ADVANTAGES of doing this?

I only ask because yeah... you're "independent".....I really don't think this will stand out for employers, or am I under estimating the other advantages?

Do employers really like/favour those who study abroad? ESPECIALLY if it is at a reknown/prestigious Uni?

i guess it will look good on ur resume ... shows ur character a bit, may be better units overseas...etc......
but it costs a lot uni friend is spending 15-20k just going for a semester (accomodation, insurance, food, travelling etc...)... and u gotta organise like everything...lol

My two cousins went on exchange overseas, I'm not sure which unis they went to and whether they were prestigious or not but they had an absolute ball! One of them went to Denmark and the other to Switzerland and they found they barely studied but basically partied for a whole semester and travelled! They told me they highly recommended me doing it as well. Although I must admit I doubt they really cared about job prospects but really just to have an awesome time overseas! 

The open day at Monash this year continually encouraged us to consider going on exchange because they stated that it was considered quite impressive by future employers because we had understanding of different cultures etc. 

Also after looking into it, it doesn't sound that expensive because you pay no uni fees (normal hecs fees) and if you go well for the first year of uni, the uni can give you a travel scholarship (couple of grand) to go overseas.

*the Uni helps with accommodation...e.g. Melbourne Uni's website says all Uni's they have agreements with are required to make an effort to help with accommodation

*In regards to the costs, the Uni and the partner institution, does help subsidize a lot of it, so its not TOO bad

*Yeah, Monash etc did encourage us to take the opportunity to go Overseas.....but is it really worth it? Like does it make THAT much of a difference, like sure I am going to HAVE FUN, and study as well but i was hoping in future it will be of some beenfit when applying for work?

tbh if I was an employer, I wouldnt care if some1 decided to study overseas....that is, its not hard to fill out a few papers and go on a plane... (I am dumbing it down a lot, but its the main jist)

They say this, but some partner universities don't really have much accommodation to offer exchange students, so you can get lumped with a pretty crap place to stay if you're unlucky.

What do you mean a lot? At ANU, the standard grant you get is $2000 for a semester, which basically covers a return flight to Europe. I've already spent about $9000 so far on exchange, and I'll probably spend another $3-4000 before I head back home at the beginning of February. You need to save up a fair bit beforehand, because it's often difficult to get a job while on exchange.

No idea on this one I'm guessing the whole international experience is always seen as beneficial, moreso in particular areas of employment (e.g. if you want to work for DFAT or something). I wouldn't go on exchange for employment reasons though, I'd go because you want to travel and see new things and meet new people and have a fun time.

yeah uni friend he gets 2.5 grand for wateva exchange u do, so u can use it wateva way u want
and thats it... and theres like a more expensive grant they can give but he didn't qualify for it cause i think hes on scholarship so eh

It's not that easy. Most applications will take around 3 months to complete. You are forgetting the logistics of studying overseas, such as
- applying for approval from your faculty (which itself can take ages)
- getting student visas, work visas
- arranging accommodation, jobs etc.
- buying plane tickets etc.
- finding the money to fund it

Dont think the employer would really care much... but it does sound like a blast.
(You can always travel another time.. or during holidays if you just want fun)

I'm on a short language exchange at the moment, and I'd recommend it to everyone. My French is much better already, and I'm gaining such an insight into the culture. Don't think about exchanges in terms of employability - do it to learn.

And I know, I know. My number one reason TO travel is for the fun and experience. I was just trying to kill 2 birds with 1 stone (regarding looking good for resume).

And bumber about "humph" how u spent $9000......i would never be able to afford that =(

yeh, going to the US is a massive pain in the ass, and some courses need you to actually organise placements a year before you go, this can be exceptionally annoying due to the different semester dates between australian/european & US institutions.

A friend of mine looked at doing a clinical placement at oxford for her 5th year elective and found that she would have been required to have it organised in her 3rd year, not easy at all
