University Choices

It seems to me that virtually everyone on VN is either going or wants to go to Monash or UoM.
I have asked many people and they see these two universities as "more prestigious" or "better".
It is possibly because these are old, or they are commonly ranked high amongst lists. However, does this really matter?
My career counsellor said that employers DO NOT care what uni you went to, they care more about how well you were involved and how well you performed.
Personally, I want to do Biomedicine at Deakin but every time I bring this up to people (not on VN) I get a lecture about how I should be going to Monash or UoM.
Shouldn't the atmosphere, people and accessibility of Universities influence your choice? (seeing as though Australian Uni's seem to be on par with each other in terms of educational value).
I just don't understand peoples absolute lusts to go to Monash or UoM.
Anyone else's thoughts?

Well personally I know people that have gone to Monash and they said it was great, that endorsement alone is enough for me. But if you need more, I think it's like you want to go to the best uni you can, the uni with the best reputation. Deakin and Latrobe are also based largely outside of metropolitan Melbourne, Deakin has Waurn Ponds in Geelong and Waterfront Geelong etc and Latrobe has Albury/Wodonga, Bendigo etc this may be an issue for some that want to stay near Melbourne or move away from the country.

Just some thoughts there.

Not necessarily. University grades sometimes do not correspond with each other - e.g. a HD at uni A may not be the same as a HD at uni B.

Monash and Melbourne get the most funds from the government which means better resources and most of the time..? good teachers and better management overall i think. and they are more research focussed with better connections to other facilities around australia and worldwide

not that deakin is a bad university by any stretch

I live in the geelong area and have decided to make the commute to go to Monash Caulfield for Commerce purely because of its better reputation than Deakin. It means an extra 2 hours a day commuting than if I went to Deakin but I'm hoping it'll be worth it.
Deakin doesn't seem to have that great of a reputation compared to Melb uni and Monash which I personally believe will affect my chances of employability in the future, especially getting into those competitive larger firms.
I'm not sure about Biomedicine but I have heard the standard for teaching is quite crap for Deakin Geelong in Commerce.
For example: teachers taking 'smokos' during lectures or stopping 2 hour lectures after only 30 minutes and saying they're finished and to go home.
Also the lower enter scores means it takes twice as long to teach simple basics. My friend said he was extremely frustrated because it took a whole hour for Deakin to teach simualtenous equations to the Commerce students with only two variables and some of them still didn't get it!
I'm not sure about the reputation for biomedicine at Deakin though and perhaps ask a few students their personal opinion of the course if you ever get the chance!
Anyway good luck :)

All Universities may have bad things said about them... I know Deakin univeristy has never had someone kill someone else on campus.... unlike monash ;)
Also, I would really like being a smart one in my class :P
Anyways, I dont wanna poke fun at Monash but realistically, not all uni's have an excellent reputation.

I was using an example, I was not specifically quoting the actual murder word for word.
Anyway, a valid reason for choosing a uni is safety.
