Reckon I might possibly have a chance for this award?

I was so pissed off, a 49 was in my bottom two. Damn VCAA, my ENTER could have been slightly higher (and thus meet personal goal and make me satisfied) if Further had been in my top 4...

Yeah you will probably get it...

Stop being bitter! :P And I know this sounds snarky, but stop blaming VCAA!
Well it does - you wouldn't blame the VCAA because you've got a perfect score. I've got a 49 in my bottom two, and haven't manipulated the scaling system, but still wound up with a lower score.

I don't see why VCAA is to blame for your predicament.  I agree that the current system is somewhat flawed, but at least they're trying to adjust for cohort discrepancies by scaling.

Are you angry about the whole 'English in primary 4' thing?  Oh well, there's really nothing you can do about it, so like xXNovaxX said, try to focus on the positives (you did really well!!)

And are you implying that I 'manipulated the scaling system'?  I think my 99.95 is chiefly a result of my 50 in English, not any scaling miracles that worked in my benefit.  (I apologise if this was not your sentiment)

No, that really wasn't my sentiment - I'm sorry if that's how it sounded :( I meant - by referring to the James Lu thread, how some people try and manipulate the scaling system taking subjects that scale over 50 - I didn't do this, and feel disadvantaged. And I agree, your 50 in English is definitely a driving force for that exceptional score.

Yeah, that's what I'm fuming about - English being in the top 4. It caused me a lot of stress the whole year, and now it's all over, but I can't help wishing Further had been in my top 4 with the rest instead of Eng - it doesn't reflect getting close to 50 in 3 subjects :(

It bothers me that people are allowed to exhibit weakness in a subject like Chem say, or Accounting, and can get away with it by having the subject in their bottom two. What if people are struggling with English - I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one with this problem. I found it really hard to study for, it just didn't click :(

I agree with what you're saying. Assuming my other scores stayed the same, I would've needed a 50 in English to get a 99.95, and that's with Spesh scaling to 52. (My aggregate was 193, 209.1 was needed for 99.95) Although I always knew that scaling would help me out, especially with Spesh, I was more focused on scoring really good raw scores for my maths/chem subjects. I always knew that English wouldn't be a spectacular score, and if I tried to go about it intelligently, I should've aimed for 46 raws in my subjects because then they scale to around 49 so there's little difference between a 46 and 50 after scaling and I could've spent more time improving English. In fact the dux at my school (99.6) beat me despite his top subject being a 47 in English. Really, it is English that will affect your ENTER the most. You could try doing what I did and score really well in other subjects, but in the end it is English that will bring your score down. Either way, I'm still very happy about my score, and I was hoping for at least 35 in English and that's what I got. It was an improvement from my C average in year 11 and that's what matters to me. Now I don't have to do English specific subjects which makes me relieved. I know for certain that my score will get me into my course and once I'm in Uni, this score won't mean much anymore, what matters is learning new stuff and doing what I enjoy. It will be nice to always reflect on how I did and I will always know I put in a massive effort and my score reflects that.

That's what I did too - knew English was going to be lower than my rest, concentrated on my other subjects with the aim of scoring well in them, tried for English but it didn't work out. I agree, English will ultimately bring your score down, even if you have done exceptionally in your other subjects - like you have, 50 in Spesh is absolutely amazing - I just wish that people's exceptional work like 49s in Chem and my own 49s were also acknowledged in a nicer way, that excluded Eng. But I agree, you did do really well, I think I did really well too, but VCE is a game of personal satisfaction, which I think I'll never be able to achieve :P

My overall impression of the year: VCE is pretty shit, secondary education should be about learning, expanding knowledge and not just simply being trained to perfect the same shit over and over and over again to not make a few mistakes.

fuck that. I don't go to school to prepare for exams, I go to school to learn.

So yeah, I'd say screw VCE and just move on.

There's much more to learn in life - whether it is academics or sports or music than to be kicking yourself for getting a 49 and not a 50.

As far as I know there are people who get mid 30's in maths who are way better than me at maths so it just goes to show how meaningless a study score is.

ilovemathsmeth, seriously - you've got an ENTER that so many people can only dream of, you beat over 90% of people doing english to get a 43, you've got a scholarship to UoM - just be satisfied with what you have. Besides, in uni no-one's going to care what your ENTER was, so there's no point in plotting to take VCAA down because you missed out on a perfect score by a slight margin. People are hardly ever content with what they have - you said yourself that you have goals which are almost impossible to satisfy (or something along those lines). You never know - had you gotten 99.95, you perhaps might have lamented not receiving higher individual study scores. Just try to be happy with what you've achieved! You've done fantastically!

Fully agree. I really need to stop being pessimistic (it's driving me insane). I'd have been the same way despite whatever I got as my ENTER. Thanks for your kind words :) My goals were impossible to achieve. I was doing badly in English the entire year - I should have gracefully accepted this and moved on lol.

Thanks everyone, I do agree - now is the time to just accept what I got and look at it for its worth. It's an awesome score, I'm just being a pedantic freak :(

As much as i agree with this "VCE is shit" there is another approach to take rather then "screw it and move on" - for those still doing it.
If they force you to play a bad game, exploit it.
If they have an imbalance, abuse it.
If certain things are favoured, mass them.

What needs to be done for the time being, that is until this is fixed, is a playing to win attitude must be adopted.

p.s. Current system is really not teaching students how to fail by turning us into a number. Also why do we only get one shot at it? i.e. In America, the SATs can be taken multiple times relieving students of the d-day pressure. Also this gives the opportunity to learn from failed SATs so that you can plan a counter-strategy next time.

that actually doesn't sound bad, BTW is anyone here going to be attempting an ivy league uni admission? I heard on the age article that a few from MGS were going to be trying (the 99.95ers)? wha would you need in terms of an enter for it to even be worth trying and is there any advantage compared to going to a uni here?

To get into any American university, you have to do the SATs and also fulfill numerous other admission criteria such as essays, have a good CV, interviews etc.  Requirements vary from college to college.

I was referring to ILMM and obviously she has finished VCE. Ofcourse current students should care about VCE as much as possible but for those who have finished, why regret over something you can't change anymore?

To be honest, there's not much point in applying for an Ivy League uni for undergraduate studies; generally, they wouldn't be a whole lot better than any of the Group of 8 universities in Australia (and their system is even worse than UoM's in that you have to do heaps of breadth subjects).

Agreed.  I can vouch for the MGS kids though in saying that most of the ones who want to go to Ivy League unis are either international kids or plan on staying over in the US.
