To anyone out there doing Arts/Law at Monash - ninwa? - does the arts component of your studies get "neglected" to accommodate the Law degree? As in, could you still complete a double major as part of your studies?
My reason for asking is, I had heard a rumour that this was so, and as I'm considering graduate studies in the humanities, I need my Arts degree to be as jam-packed as possible haha.
Where did you hear that?! I'm doing a double major right now in German and French. It's definitely possible - you just won't be able to do any other electives.
If you do straight arts, you can do 2 majors + 2 minors. Or 2 majors + 1 minor + random electives.
If you do arts/law, you can do 2 majors, or 1 major + 2 minors. Or 1 major + 1 minor + random electives.
So it is only a small difference
But if you know that you want to be a lawyer, why not go straight into it?
You don't even have to want to be a lawyer
I don't! I want to go into academia. Or work in diplomacy.
To me this sounds like very sage advice. I'm fairly sure that I don't want to be a practising lawyer; my only reason for considering law is that I've heard horror stories about humanities grad students driving taxis full-time, and so some kind of professional degree, and the security it brings, is attractive. Of course, I'm sure fear is a poor motivator though.
This was my initial reason for doing arts/law (except replace humanities with languages). You never know what might happen. Now, along with diplomacy (which is incredibly competitive and I'm not likely to succeed in), I'm considering becoming a law lecturer. I greatly underestimated my interest in the law.
Plus, if you really don't like it, you can always just drop it. I know people who did. I think the safer option is to do arts/law @ Monash and drop law if you really hate it... rather than do arts at UoM, decide you want to do law, but not be able to get into JD because your LSAT wasn't good enough.
