What should I do to prepare for Bus Man 3/4 2010?
« on: December 17, 2009, 02:36:42 pm »

Hi, next year I'm doing one Yr 12 subject being Bus Man, and just wondering how much study is required to get 40+. I realise that it is a combination of rote learning aswell as writing to properly suit what the question is asking. But while I have a month until school starts, and not much to do, should I revise anything.

I want to do really well so that I can work out the amount of work that needs to be done, aswell as beating my friends  :) ahaha

I have so far thought of 5 options that I could do, and just wondering if anyone that has done well previously could give advice.

a) Read the entire Textbook (We use A+ Notes book as our textbook because our teacher is the author)
b) Read through and learn Shinny's Notes
c) Read the papers daily to see current business issues.
d) All of the Above?
e) Nothing

Thanks for your help

Read the study design so you've got an idea of what you'll be learning throughout the year
Concentrate on getting the first AOS down pat first, don't attempt to place  a years worth of knowledge in your mind within a few weeks.

I wouldn't soley rely on the A+ Notes book either. Yeah it's a good supplement, but it's really not that good as a class textbook...

And keep up to date with business news (The Age, internet etc), it really helps to be able to link the theory which you learn in class to the real world.

When you say AOS, do you mean I should start reading that and only that as I get closer to starting school so that what I'm reading is relevant?

the thing with busman, psych, legal, ect, they aren't too complicated.
so you really don't need much holiday prep, just when you start the year, start to memorise/learn/create notes on a weekly basis, to be always prepared for sacs. then review during holiday breaks. (if only i did that..)

Hey dude. I did business in '09 as my 3/4 at Padua as well. Trust me it's the best subject by far to do. The top three results for year elevens doing 3/4s at Padua was in business. The psych and bio students mostly didn't do too great.
You pretty much just need A+ notes, it contains almost everything you need and cuts all the crap. Ms McNaughton is the best teacher ever and gives out heaps of handouts and stuff so you will be more than prepared for the exam. You could also get Leading Edge, I bought all the study guides and this was the best apart from A+ notes. But make sure its for the new study design.
I would start lightly going over the unit 3 material and try doing some questions. Definitions is what will probably eat away at your time the most next year.
Every single SAC will contain like 2 and sometimes even 5. So I suggest try to learn some of the chapter one definitions to get a headstart so it will be easier to relearn them next year. The best way to learn definitions is with cue cards. You learn the first one then learn a second then go back the first again and then do the second then learn the third etc...
I would also spend some time collating practice exams. I know I spent quite a lot of time trying to find more and more. Ms McNaughton will give you quite a few but you should always try and get more.
The most important thing is to do practice exams. Try and do at least 10 with 8 of them in timed conditions roughly a month to two weeks before the exam and the VCAA ones the week leading up to the exam. Also be sure to get all them of marked to see how you're doing. Whoever did the most practice exams got the best scores.
Btw. Looking at the paper for business issues isn't necessary at all because Ms. McNaughton always brought clippings to class and showed us them so you don't really need to bother with that. Also make sure you write Ms. not Mrs. on your sacs she hates being called Mrs. for some reason haha.
Good Luck with next year. If you have any questions feel free to ask.

Btw. Me and my friend who got the two top scores of 44 and 49 did heaps and heaps of study for it. We basically abandoned our year 11 subjects to do all bus man revision.
For the end of year 11 exams I would highly recommend not studying for them until after your business one. Otherwise you could get muddled with the information and the year 11 ones don't count so why bother really. Me and my friend did by far the most practice exams which guaranteed our scores. I did roughly 12 and she did like 15.
Also don't worry too much about SACs marks. I only got A's for my SACs then on the statement of results I had A+ for both unit 3 and 4. So just make sure you get A+ on the exam and you should be fine. Just try and get consistent marks of A and above. Operations Management is the SAC everyone struggled with so you should go over that. I think the average was a D+ and I got B+ which I wasn't happy with haha. The other SACs are quite simple but contain some really random questions in all.

Hi, firstly relax and enjoy the break as BM is a pretty easy subject.
The other poster suggested not worrying about SACs. I would disagree as they provide you with a good start in terms of your study, and allows you to achieve your greatest potential in terms of the score.
In prep I would say just read over the materials for AOS 1.
In BM as long as you memorize the content it is the way in which you respond to the questions. You need to ensure you define everything, relate your answer back to the case study and bring materials from the outside business world as well, EG the GFC if '08.
Try practise this in all of your sacs in preperation for the exam.
Good luck!

going through the study design along with your text would be a great start to familiarise yourself with the course. you don't need go too far ahead for now, just make sure you're not playing catch up during the year by keeping up to date notes and regularly revising.
enjoy the summer while you can! best of luck!  :)

I feel that I did well in BM because I picked up the concepts early and then just kept working on remembering them throughout the year. I only used Shinny's notes, plus in-class stuff, and that got me a 46 so they certainly seem to do the trick.

2009 - Further (48), Business (46), English (41), Literature (38), Methods (31)
