Check out the Herald Sun. They've only got rankings from 1-24 but I'm sure it wont be long until the whole list is sorted. And in the middle section they've got all the schools with details and whatnot.

They won't sort out the entire list.  There was a big debate about it not too long ago.  Why won't they do it?

Well, it's because ranking schools based on just VCE results won't provide a "valid indicator" of school performance.
You are right!

I fell for it just now using the new site provided.

It said "x" school achieved for example 10% of students over 40 SS (public school), and im like Oh wow

Then I checked the VCAA website, and it only has 30 students for example doing a Unit 3/4.......

Therefore the scores are not indicative of the school overall

Yep.  That's what I mean.  Look at Swifts Creek Secondary College, for example.  They used to do as well as your top elite private schools in terms of VCE performance, but because they only have like 9 year 12's, just a couple of 40+'s could easily make the school look in good in terms of the % of study scores over 40.

They've been well known for a few years for being strong in English.  Otherwise, yeah.

Yeah.  They're a Jewish co-educational school.  I'm not sure about this, but I think it's Jewish customs (?) and the value that they place on education that propels them to dominate the VCE.  They highly value education and hence do quite well when given the chance.

Hmm...

The top 5 rankings are basically: Jewish, selective, selective, Jewish, Jewish

Again, it's all about the distribution of students.  Most kids at MHS/MacRob are obviously "smart", because they've gotten into the selective school.  The Jewish schools are 100% Jewish (lol), and from what I've heard Jewish families are very focused on making sure their kids do well academically, hence the high scores all-round.  If you had a school composed entirely of a similar ethnicity, my instincts would tell me it would also do pretty well (a school of 100% Asians/Indians, for instance...).

In comparison, even the most elite private schools can't compete simply because not 100% of their student population will be the high achieving sorts found in the aforementioned schools, as there will always be kids who simply don't want to learn or who aren't as capable academically as kids who are "smart" or who have families encouraging them to do well all the time.  Of course, I'm not saying that EVERYONE at selective/Jewish schools is "zomgacademicprolah", but I'd say the difference is enough to give them a significant advantage in the rankings.

Thats very true indeed.

I strongly doubt that the "type" of school you attend to really has an effect on how you perform. In my opinion it's your own work ethic that gets you to where you are or where you want to be. But also take into account that the "environment" in which you study also has a diverse effect on what you get. Eg, kids in rich schools tend to do better only because of the available facilities and the high standards of the school that whack them into place.

But then again, there are kids across the board whether they go to some rich ass eastern school or some shitty government hole that simply have no desire to study. It's not uncommon to find kids that go to the worst of all possible schools and still end up getting high Enter's. That's real work ethic for you.

Vietnamese: 22 [26]

2010:
Chemistry: 40+
Physics: 45+
Specialist Maths: 40+
English: 45+
Japanese: 30+

Hopefully: 99+
Ambition: Medicine, Pharmacy or Radiography.

Ignore the above. I've failed Year 12 and life. I've had an epiphany... I'm destined to become a gigalo.

I think a lot of the differences comes down to school environment and school culture. A culture of high achievement in turn encourages and fosters high achievement. If hard work is appreciated, students are more likely to work hard. If their peers work hard, students are more likely to work hard. That's the major difference imo. Because while there is some variation every year, in general one will find the same selective/Jewish schools topping the list.

The teachers at my school are shocking. The only reason my school did well is because the student population is primarily Asian, and therefore most students have private tutors.

0.o Being Asian means you have a private tutor???

And here is why the median score is an absolutely useless statistic.
http://www.scotthyoung.com/blog/2009/12/16/the-crowd-is-stupid-you-dont-need-genius-to-beat-them/

Also, I really wouldn't want to attend an 100% Asian school; I appreciate diversity.
