I don't understand why I got a low mark...

Hey,

I was in year 11 this year and completed units 3 & 4 of food and technology. My GA 1 GA 2 & GA 3 were all A+ yet i only got a 39. Wtf?!
I emailed VCAA and they sent me back something completely irrelevant to my question. I wouldn't be so pissed off but people in my class who recieved 42,43 etc had 2 A+'S and one A. A girl in my class got 38 yet only recieved one a+

I don't get it. Can someone please try and help me understand? Lol, i feel so jibbed because i *thought* i did great on the subject and a 39 goes to a 33.  Grrr :tickedoff:

Low A+'s. 39 wouldd make sense if you were in the top 9% rather than the top 1% for all those assessments. Eg. if the A+ cut off was 90% you would have gotten 91-92% for your GA's. The people who got A may have gotten 89% just missing out on A+ and gotten high ie. 98+% for their A+ assessments. You should know that a subject like that would be heavily scaled down.

Biology is the same, I've heard of people scoring 3 A+ and only getting 38-39.
Like amirite? mentioned, they must have been very low A+s, and the A's from the others must have been really high.
A 39 raw is still a great score though

b+,a+,a will also give you a 38
comes down to whether your marks were a high A+ or low

I had a rude awakening also, in year 11, with a not spectacular Information Systems (now known as IT: Software Development) mark (ended up scaling down to mid 30s as well).

But it's an experience that pushes you to try harder, and out of complacency/overconfidence/or the perception that it is quite easy! I ended up doing very well in my VCE, by most people's standards, so don't let this discourage you.

Completely agree here. In 2008 I was devastated when I only received 39 in Legal despite 3 A+'s. Unfortunately, letter grades can be very ambiguous so you cannot assume A+'s will automatically get you a 40+.

I'm just annoyed because i thought i did so well throughout the year. I bet you the reason i got a 39 is because i didn't get full marks for my folio, which contributes 40% of my final score...while others *maybe* did

apparently due to our brain developing and carrying skills we learnt from year 11 studies, we tend to naturally do better & study more efficiently in year 12. so if you studied really hard for a 39, and did the same hard work for another subject you'd definitely be able to get 40+

Lol Y11 has shattered my perception of VCE's difficulty. I initially thought a 40+ for Methods was impossibly difficult, as well as learning the Spesh course. But then again I'm the type who tends to overestimates anything related to academics. And this shattering of beliefs might work against my next year =/

I know of someone who got A+ A+ A+ and got a 42 while another got A+ A A+ and got a 44. It all comes down to how well you actually DID perform to get an A+. You're A+ may just be over an A while your other friends may have an A+ that are perfect scores, while an A that is just below an A+.

And can I add, I think it's amazing that you did a 3/4 in Year 10 and another 2 in Year 11.  Well done!  You are basically set.
