Bit obvious, but it's advantageous to have a laptop if you're doing any type of comp sci/IT degree (though not as much as you'd think - you can get away with not bringing one at all).

Slightly related - one of my subjects next year actually requires me to have (or at least have access to) an Apple computer. It's my excuse to upgrade my old MacBook ::)

 monash has tons of computers in the engineering labs. you don't need a laptop. computer at home / use monash computers at uni is fine.

Re: arts - depends on the subjects you're taking

Re: law - about 85% of people have laptops lol. Would recommend one unless you either
a) can write really really really fast;
b) plan to study so well that missing some things your lecturer says won't matter too much (unlikely); or
c) don't mind re-listening to recordings of lectures to get the stuff you missed

Just the answer I was looking for :) I have terribly messy handwriting, so I'm sure a laptop would be a further bonus. Now I have to investigate whether a netbook is big enough for my hands :P

Laptops for engineering? crap, I just spent 2 grand on a computer a few months ago. fuck fuck double fuck

Calm down!

You don't have to have a Laptop, but a computer atleast with good specs. For engineering we had to use MATLAB (I'll probably still use it for maths and physics - great modelling program which is worth $4000, but students get it for $100) and it killed my POS laptop.

Basically if you plan on doing your study on the campus (instead of going home after the day),  having access to a laptop is good.

By the looks of things that is a pretty cool computer.

With uni a netbook is SO much better than a laptop. The fact is they are lighter and can do all the stuff you need them for. I brought my laptop to uni this year and it killed my back, people who take laptops usually only have their laptop on them.

I love my netbook, and they're fairly cheap. They're also really good for travel, I've found. I got one with linux installed instead of Windows, which I would really recommend unless you need to use Windows-specific software.
