Not at all, in my experience in commerce @ UoM, laptops are kinda rare, mostly because all notes are made available well in advance, and there are plenty of computers available at the university to use for work.

Although, I plan on buying one this year :P

You should have a computer, but not necessarily a laptop. If you want to work on campus though, sometimes it's difficult to get a computer.

Great. I have heaps of computers at home, that's not a problem. At uni if need be I'll just use one of the computers there, but I feel more comfortable working at home so that'll be where I get most of my work done.

Uni for me will be 40 minutes away. Some days I'll have to leave 90 minutes before a lecture just to avoid peak hour traffic. Therefore I'll probably end up doing most of my study at uni in their lovely library so I guess bringing my laptop with me will probably be better

Is having a large battery capacity important? Or do they have powerpoints available in the library?

Uni's have powerpoints for students.

You could probably do uni without a laptop, but it's good to have one so you can work on typed assignments. If you are doing engineering, a laptop is a MUST.

With lectures though, you are best off printing off the slides (4 to a page if there is a lot of slides) and then just writing over them.

Yeah I plan to use my laptop at uni for the programming parts of my engineering course. However I prefer writing notes so I'll just print out the lecture notes/slides and write on them like you said :)

Re: arts - depends on the subjects you're taking

Re: law - about 85% of people have laptops lol. Would recommend one unless you either
a) can write really really really fast;
b) plan to study so well that missing some things your lecturer says won't matter too much (unlikely); or
c) don't mind re-listening to recordings of lectures to get the stuff you missed

With engineering EVERYTHING you do is computer programming or you are typing up assignments. Pretty much all the engineering students have a laptop.

If you are planning on doing maths (especially the applied areas) you will need a computer either in your first year or further down the road, the same would go with physics (probably the same for biology, chemistry). Other areas that are no brainers are meteorology or computer science.
