Hope I don't sound too dumb, but if you get an A+ in all three of your GA's in any subject, are you guaranteed a 40+?

unfortunately, no.

If all those A+s are very low A+s, it is possible to get high 30s (maybe 38). This seems to occur more often with LOTEs.

^yep.

considering that approx 9% per subject get 40+, & some subject midyear/end years have 10% of people getting an A+, it's possible to get below 40.

There is a significant difference between a 98-100% and a 92ish%. Compare - a single error to 4 or 5. There is a large gap in ability between the top A+ and bottom A+, and 100th and 90th percentiles.

I got A+,A+, A for physics and ended up with 41, so yes, vce is screwed.

for example chem
person 1: A+,A+,A+, very low A+'s in both exams (where 10% of poeple get an A+) and gets 39.
person 2: A+,A,A, Achieved 100% in first exam (chem midyear exam was very hard this year), averaged very high A in both sacs and exam, one mark off from A+, and achieved 42. So makes sense.
It's not that screwd up in this way really.

Its only screwed up if you look at it from a letter grade perspective. If you look at it percentile ranges in which the student ranked then you'd see its pretty darn fair. I challenge someone to come up with a better system of marking.

A+,A,A+ --> 40 in English

A+ (95%) A - (87%) A+ (96%)
278(%) / 300(%) = 92.67(%)
= 92nd Percentile or Top 8% or 40(SS)

Makes perfect sense. Not screwed at all.

One of my friends for Methods had an A+, A, A+ and received a 44.

Because it is Methods, the A only counted as 22% of his score, as it didn't count for much, he was able to get 44 thanks to his high Exam 2 mark
Religion and Society (38), IT - Software Development (45) English (35), Chemistry (49), Methods CAS (48), Specialist Maths (50)
