Well it would depend on the students, but it does work sometimes... like it did at the intro lecture at acu hehe

that teacher I mentioned is a venerated maths god - has that evil grin when he makes those 'jokes.'

teachers jokes are mostly a pathetic way of getting students attention.
The only teach ive ever known that made good jokes and can actually teach is a physics teacher at TSFX.

Haha, I've had a few. They usually have funny personalities (not jokes specifically), or have some really funny stories to tell.

Yeah, that joke was a bit annoying too.
I wasn't trying to be cold or unsympathetic to the fact that he's experienced a personal trauma but rather him using his his finger-absent fist continuously to make jokes. That was the case when I was @ TSFX last year at least.. It just gets a little out of hand (no pun intended ;x) especially when he wasted around 15 minutes making weird dogs with his hands using the board-projector.
