ATAR FAQ

Heyz,

Well I thought that the new ATAR system might confuse some people so maybe we should have an FAQ?

Question:
So all the states get marked as one? Does that mean we all sit the same papers otherwise how would we compare to each other? If we are all sitting the same exam, isnt that a bit unfair because someone in melbourne could just sell the exam to someone in PERTH (4hrs behind) and that person could get A+ easy.:P

I thought, atm, ATAR is name only, every state is still doing their individual education systems.
Hmm...next year already. Well better set my goals and all...(raw)

once the national curriculum is all implemented how different will it actually be to the current VCE system?
ie is it just a few name changes here and there or is it a massive restructure?

Pretty sure it's just a name change from ENTER to ATAR in preparation for the implementation of the National Curriculum.

How do you think the VCE or whatever its gonna be would be structured when they implement a national curriculum? Would it be harder? I mean, competition would definitely rise but...

It is only a name change from ENTER to ATAR. Like in Victoria, we undergo the VCE system and receive an ENTER score. In NSW, they undergo the HSC system and receive a UAI score. In other states they already have the ATAR name. Though a UAI and ENTER are calculated slightly differently, they are still very similar. Aka a 99 UAI and ENTER are practically the same score. I believe they brought the ATAR in to minimise confusion when applying for interstate unis

The answer is, we're still not sure how this is exactly going to work. You can have a look at ACARA (Australian Curriculum Assessment and Reporting Authority) website http://www.acara.edu.au/curriculum.html so why how they are going about developing the curriculum.

Until a complete National Curriculum (every subject) is implemented we will still complete VCE but the guidelines for English, Science, History etc would be Australia-wide. I'm not sure if they would be marked against the state or country though.

The only states that had the ATAR before anyone else was NSW and ACT.  Now pretty much every other state and territory except QLD because they run on a totally different system is changing just their name to ATAR.

Would they still do the exams separately as a state, or is it going national?

Part of the Legal Studies course has to do with Victorian Parliament, Victorian laws, etc. so I dont see how its possible for them to change the Legal Studies courses for each state at least. Unless they abolish the states... A few other subjects would be the same.

Theyd probably just scale subjects against each other like we already do.
