Chemistry Weblinks & Resources

I've decided to compile a list of Chemistry resources. If this looks familiar to you, it follows a similar format to Toothpaste's thread, Biology Weblinks & Resources (Hope you don't mind, I'm not that creative :P). Feel free to add to this list, and I will add stuff and update this list every now and then.

Supplementary Material

Here is a list (there are many others) of additional books you may consider getting. These can be purchased from Senior Students VCE Resource Centre or Academic and General. Here are some advantages and disadvantages that are based of personal opinion and experience.

Chemistry Checkpoints 2009
If you are getting a copy second hand, the 2008 version would be fine. It's suited for the new syllabus. The newer versions would be the same, just with exam questions that could be printed off the VCAA website.

Advantages
  • Has past exam questions organised into topics
  • Has a copy of the precious year's exam (The rest can be printed off the VCAA website)
  • Additional questions written to reinforce concepts
  • Full explanation provided for all questions

Disadvantages
  • None

NEAP Chemistry
There are two books - one for Unit 3 and another for Unit 4.

Advantages
  • Has MC and short answer practice questions for every topic, organised into separate chapters. Good to get them done as you progress through the semester
  • Questions do reflect the difficulty of the actual exam questions and are suited to the new study design
  • Has 3 practice exams at the back of the book
  • Worked solutions and full explanations for every question
  • Has questions to cover all required concepts so nothing will be missed out

Disadvantages
  • The 3 exam papers provided only ensures the understanding of all concepts and do not accurately reflect the difficulty of the actual exam

A+ Chemistry

Advantages
  • Contains a summary and notes for all topics
  • Has practice questions for each topic
  • Explanations and solutions provided

Disadvantages
  • The book contains mainly notes, which are rather brief. Students could fall into the trap of just reading the summaries in the book rather than a textbook. They should aim to write their own summaries, therefore this book may not be preferred over others

Alright, I've finally added all the links I've wanted to. Some sites worth checking out are Khan Academy's video tutorials and Spark Notes' summary notes. I've been using these for my VCE Chemistry preparation back in 2008, and I recommend these.

Some members have uploaded worked solutions to the problems in the Heinemann 1 & 2 textbook as well as commercial practice exams. I've posted these links so as to make them easier to find :P

I also recommend getting supplementary books for practice and to reinforce concepts throughout the semester. These books can be bought from the Senior Students VCE Resource Centre (SSRC) or Academic and General. It's probably worth going to the SSRC this weekend (if you haven't) to pick up a couple of study guides. They've got a wide range of study guides for most subjects especially for English. The guy who works there used to teach at my school and he would be able to give some great advice.

Finally, for students doing first year Chemistry, you might want to check out the MIT OpenCourseware. They've recorded their lectures and made them available to everyone. You can either watch them off Youtube or download them from iTunes (search MIT Chemistry, MIT Physics, etc...).

If there are any links that you would like to share, post it and I'll stick it in the opening post.

I hope you guys enjoy learning Chemistry as much as I do, study smart and good luck with your exams :)

I have a shiteload of Chem notes from Xavier (3/4), PLC (1/2) and from a tuition class(some 1/2, mostly 3/4) (tuition notes are GOOD, have worked examples taken from past vcaa papers dating all the way back to the 1970s...the trickiest questions of the past 4 decades). Too many for me to just upload all of it, so if there's any specific topic notes anyone wants, I can put them online. I also have pdf of the Heinemann Chem2 text.
I won the GAT: 49/50/50.
