Biomedicine/Science at UOM T.T

Ok, so as you all know LOL "ALL" ><" I missed out on Biomedicine and will now be doing Science at melbourne. So what kind of opportunities have i lost because i'm now doing science instead of biomedicine. What are the perks of biomedicine that ill miss out on? People are saying that there is no advantage of doing biomedicine over science for graduate courses such as optometry and medicine, so then why would they make a whole different course called BIOMEDICINE ... I'm so dissapointed in my self right now T.T and i appreciate the efforts of Edmund who has kindly informed me of his great experiences in Science and ensures that i will enjoy it also. I hope i do  :-[ By the way.. people are suggesting to transfer to biomedicine? is this an option i should consider.. if so what is involved ??

I'm sure ill look back at the end of this year and be like why was i so dissapointed.. but i guess when your gunning for a course for a whole year and you dont get it.. It's a bit CUT THROAT =(

At melbourne it doesnt really matter what New Gen degree you do, it's really flexible, as a science student you can do the same subjects (and basically the same majors) as a biomed student, the first year biomed core is basically just biology and maths (i.e. you can do the same subjects through science), so it doesnt really matter.

I would like to know this aswell.

I know with biomedicine the chemistry, physics & biology in first year is more based towards medicine than their science counterparts.

With the Melbourne model interms of graduate studies, you can do engineering via basically science, environments, biomedicine and commerce! So I'm sure aslong as you do the prerequisites for that graduate degree, then you can pursue it. I have friends who are planning on doing medicine, but are doing science.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong. With me though because I was set on maths, physics or engineering and don't really know about the health sciences area. I knew about B.Sc + M.Sc ~ B.Eng and the other two I could only do through science.

PLEASE CONSULT STUDENT ADVISOR BEFORE MAKING ANY FINAL DECISIONS IF YOU ARE UNSURE

If you are keen on transferring to Biomed after first year, you can. I explained the transfer process here, you might want to have a look.

Here I've listed Biomed first year subjects, as well as the Science subjects to match them. You need to do all these Science subjects to gain credit for first year Biomed (otherwise you will be one semester behind).

Biomedicine First Year Subjects

Sem 1:
Biomolecules & Cells
Chemistry for Biomedicine
Calculus 1/2
Breadth

Sem 2:
Genes & Environment
Physics for Biomedicine
Experimental Design and Data Analysis
Breadth

Science First Year (Possible transfer to Biomed)

Pre-req - >27 in Specialist, VCE Physics

Sem 1:
Biology of Cells and Organisms
Chemistry 1
Calculus 2
Breadth

Sem 2:
Genetics & The Evolution of Life
Data Analysis 1
Physics 2
Breadth

Summer:
Chemistry 2

I think the only disadvantage Science has is that you learn some 'rubbish' stuff in first year Biology and you don't get to do Maths/Data Analysis which you don't need for Grad Med anyway.

Hope this helps :P

You will get a better GPA in science, so just stick with that.

I heard the only Biomedicine major you can't do in Science is "microbiology, infection and immunology".

In that case, maybe not then.  But I remember on Open Day a lady said that there was one Biomed major that you couldn't do in Science.

I think the major exclusive to Biomedicine is "Defence and Disease" :P

the subjects done in biomed are just structured in a way so they are geared more towards medicine and are just integrated bio/chem subjects which are relevant to medicine (+ physics and maths that are apparently relevant when you will never use them in real medicine :P ). it's considered one of the better preps for medicine, however, in science you can do subjects which are very similiar if you do first year bio and chem subjects, then in second year choose mostly second year bio/chem (incl. anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, pharmacology - if possible) and then selective subjects towards your major (science and biomed share majors, but science has more), and do a major that you'd want to have done in biomed, then do 3rd year bio/chem subjects on the side. and voila! it's pretty much the same as biomed, there is not really a huge benefit at all by doing biomed over science (if the subjects are chosen right) they are both very good at preparing you for medicine/health sciences.

if i didn't get in biomed, i would be happy wth science and just choose similar subjects and so it's cool. (however i wouldn't do physics or maths in science as i have to do in biomed, and do psychology subjects instead... so science would be better personally) thats a better thing about science as you have more choice :D

so do science and be proud - do subjects you enjoy more then the structured biomed..

rambling..

You will get a better GPA in science, so just stick with that.

not necessarily, the subjects aren't harder in biomed, they are just different.

not necessarily, the subjects aren't harder in biomed, they are just different.

That's an urban legend that a course requiring a higher ENTER implies it will be harder to get a the same GPA in a lower ENTER course. Physics advanced is much harder than physics for biomedicine.

I don't mean to sound rude but if you don't know of any of the advantages of doing biomedicine over science then why are you dissapointed you got into science and not biomed?

Well if you went to a biomedicine student now and asked them whether they would like to change to science.. THEY WOULDNT ! even if they dont know the advantages or disadvantages of it over science. I've been aiming for biomedicine all year so of course i'd be dissapointed if i wasn't able to get in. I guess it's just my personal preference !

And btw to do physics in bachelor of science is it set out like the biomedicine course... where there is different kind of physics depending on whether you have or havnt done it in VCE?

To be fair, you probably should have looked into it a bit more before you committed to the cause.

Committed to what ? I was committed to Biomedicine.. but i didnt make it because the clearly in went up by 3 .. i had no control of that. i'm trying to make the best of my 2nd preference by asking questions so i can make the most of what i have.. Why are you making me feel as though im doing something wrong ?
