First Semester Subjects?

So who has chosen their first semester subjects?

Mine are:

ESD1
Calculus 1
Physics 1
Managing and Leading Organisations

Anyone done/is doing any of these? Any feedback?

Pretty excited! :)

Hey redmosez :D

I did ESD1 and Calculus 1 in 2008, my first year of engineering.

ESD1 in my year, was to be quite honest, a bludge. It was a very useless subject. However, I have heard that last year, the standards of ESD1 went up and there was more work to be done n that subject.

Since I didn't have a very strong Maths background, Calculus 1 was very difficult for me - the vector stuff screwed me over so badly and I had no fun when I did the exam. I actually found Calculus 2 to be much easier than Calculus 1.

Managing and Leading Organisations was easy but dead boring. 2 assignments and 1 exam as assessment - but be aware that they get really fussy with marks and only give out H1s if you impress them :P

Lectures were too boring I don't want to talk about them. Tutorials were okay...

Hey TinyApple

I heard that ESD1 was supposed to be really hard, I really hope it's a bludge :)

Was it any fun? We had an American guy (don't remember his name) talking about it at enrolment and he made it sound pretty fun.

Both guys presenting for Eng at enrolment were awesome speakers, really hope the quality of lecturers is that good.

Hey Edmund

Damn I was hoping it would be interesting, I figure seeing as I have a choice for breadth might as well do something interesting.

Anyone have any recommendation for an interesting breadth, preferably from commerce (management).

I've heard "Intro to Micro" is pretty cool, any thoughts?

I did ESD 1 & Physics 1 advanced (basically the same as standard in terms of syllabus). Anyway:

- ESD 1: First few weeks are very bludgy and you will be going insane with boredom. Keep in mind that if the exam doesn't change that you should keep a few safety examples fresh in your mind. You will also be introduced into fluid mechanics (the difficult part is modelling through MATLAB), then you have Robolab which was a pain in the but. Overall if you put in the effort, then passing shouldn't be too hard, but it's hard for people to get high H1's.

- Physics 1: This subject starts straight away and there is ABSOLUTELY nothing bludgy about it. You will extend your mechanics knowledge, optics knowledge and special relativity knowledge (if you did special relativity in VCE, then this will shock you). Even though you only have 3 key areas don't let this fool you as you will be introduced to much more mechanics and optics stuff than what is taught in VCE. Again with a decent amount of work you can pass or even get into the H2 - H1 zone.

I haven't personally done calc 1, but from what my friends say it's like VCE specialist maths taught in 12 weeks.

The American guy is Raymond Dagastine. Yes the speeches 'make' ESD 1 sound fun, but the subject drove me crazy. Ray is a great lecturer and tries to make the subject fun (the challenge of all challenges) and we all thought he was great in that respect, but in terms of practical advice that will get you straight to the point the guy you want is Gavin. But I must mention the two professors of ESD 2 (Andrew and Jamie) are gold.

Thanks for the heads up.

Out of curiosity, what did you do for your first year breadth?

Depends for Beng it's between 37.5 and 50 points worth for the entire degree, so 3-4 subjects depending on stream.

For non Bend I believe it's 75 points all up, so 2 subjects a year.

Easy - You don't have to pay much attention to the lecturer, he rambles on and on about examples and not the theory. All you need to do is get books from the library, learn the theories yourself and do the assignment. Then you do the same for the exam (3 essay response to 3 topics - they will tell you the topics beforehand)

Boring - Lecture time is nap time. 100% theory based. Theory is boring.

Why I recommend it - Requires minimal studying, only have to spend time during assignment periods and exam period, lots of tips and hints, exam questions are too obvious once you are told the exam topics. Tutors are fantastic and make sure you get to know them
