I wouldn't be asking, but I need to book my P's in advance (apparently you're unlucky to have classes on Fridays, so I wanted to know the chance of having Fridays off so I can book them).

Can we order our timetable (once it's out) to our liking? As in, can we choose when our lectures and tutes are and which days we are free on, etc?

Basically, you'll receive your timetable on the 22nd (I think) thats been auto-allocated. This is usually pretty shit, with lots of gaps and often has you coming in every day. The day after, you can move your classes around subject to capacity. So, if you've got a 10-11am lecture you can move it to say 12-1pm providing there is room (For the record, you can attend pretty much whichever lectures you want, it's only the allocated tutorials that you have to attend). Using this system you pretty much have to hope for the best and get in early, as all the good times generally fill up pretty quickly. That said, the system usually slows to a crawl when editing is enabled because of the amount of students trying to do so.

EDIT: Yes, if you try you *should* be able to get fridays off, depending on your subjects. I did Principles of Business Law which has 3 semester tests that only run on fridays.

Ok, I see now, thanks :) So do you recommend using the 22nd to plan out what we will change on the 23rd? And also, just to clarify, it's the tutorials that we'll be switching around and not the lectures, right?

Ideally yes. You can look at the lecture and tutorial times that are offered for the subject somewhere on the website, but be aware they could be full before you even get a chance to change (almost all good tutes are taken straight away). Pretty soon your e-mail inbox will be flooded with people trying to change tutes with you, so thats an alternative if you find one you like. I haven't done it but you just email them back then meet up and go to the student centre to swap your tutes.

Sigh.. Just checked my subjects and OB lectures only run on fridays. So much for another semester of 3 day weekends. Although I suppose I can't really complain with 12 hours a week...

RE: Calc 2

I took it with some friends last year and we all found it fairly easy and all got 90+. It's fairly dry in parts, but if you enjoyed specialist, you will also enjoy this.

Tips for getting a good score:
1. Every couple of weeks read through the lecture notes, from the start up until your most recent lecture. I say this because when you take down the notes in lectures, you often do not pay attention to what you are actually writing. At first it will only take you 10 minutes to read through your notes, but by the end of the semester it will take you around an hour.
2. Take the assignments seriously. It's very nice in the lead up to exams to know you have a few spare points in the bag. The best way to do well in assignments is to do them with a couple of friends that aren't in your tute. Be meticulous with your answers, tutors will often take off marks for seemingly stupid things.
3. The mid semester test is usually after the mid semester break, so take advantage of this break to study for the test.
4. Your have two main resources for doing well in the exam. Firstly, the green question book that you will receive in your first lecture. If you do every one of these questions you will have a firm grasp of the subject matter. Now you need to polish your Calc II exam taking ability. Calc 2 practice exams are readily available. Depending on your exam schedule, leave yourself a few whole days to go over practice exams. If you find yourself in need of more practice material, go through your tute questions again.

were you and your friends usually high scorers in math ?

Calc 2 is an easy H1 subject (my only H1 subject :( ) if you work smart.

If you are a person who naturally loves calculus then you will find it a lot of fun. The main things to do are:

- Buy the lecture notes book! This is all you need to learn about the concepts (DO NOT buy the text book - I'm practically trying to give mine away). If you have the luck of getting Craig Hodgson (My favourite lecturer) then stick with him.

- Your exercise book is your bible! This book should be finished front to back, scribbled on so you can look at it and questions you felt 'so-so' on and constantly do them until you feel confident. This will hold questions that are similar to exam questions.

- The subject runs really smoothly until you hit differential equations and here is when you step up your game to keep your results consistent. Then right at the end you really start having fun with partial derivatives ( ), the differentiation part is easy, but then you need to step up your game for the other stuff. Another cool part is doing double integrals ( ).

- With assignments before you hand them in check (don't copy) with another person just to make sure you didn't make any careless mistakes. Try to do them in advance, because a cople of marks in the bag are good. With the test, make sure you iron out any problems and then attempt the practice test.

Anyway I absolutely loved this subject (It would be easier to tutor in this than specialist maths) so have fun and good luck.

Feel free to ask me for any help, but I WONT be doing assignments for people.

Awesome selection of subjects. It's a shame I won't see you in Real Analysis though.

No way! I did calc 2 & linear algebra and had an EPIC fail with linear algebra (65%) and learnt how to not sit an exam.

Anyway acc maths 1 & 2 is calc 2, linear algebra and real analysis. You could aswell drop informatics 1 and do Vector calculus.
