Which language to learn?

What do people think would be a useful language to learn? I'd rather it be one of the romantics, but it's not vital. I'd love to get into international business or something similar and (obviously) a language would be helpful, I'm just utterly lost as to which one. Any ideas?

It's really up to you, but if you want a language which is used a lot, I'd recommend something along the lines of Japanese, as it is relatively easy to learn and is used widely throughout Asia.

Personally I'm with Studyinghard and will learn French once my 2010 schooling has finished :)

I'm pretty much tossing up between French and Spanish. I was also thinking about German because I hear it's similar to Polish which I'm fluent in, but I'm not sure if I really want to learn German.

Learning Japanese "is a long and dry road to walk" now is it?

German won't help you out a whole lot, most people in Germany speak English. Learning an Asian language like Japanese or Indonesian would help you out most, especially if you want to go into business because we do a lot of business with Asia and there is a shortage of Australians who speak Asian languages funnily enough.

That's a good point you raise. Ah this so hard hahaha. The Asian languages are more practical but I'm just more attracted to learning French/Spanish/Italian for obvious reasons.

I actually refrained from suggesting Italian... I don't think it's as useful as French or Spanish, simply because it doesn't reach far beyond Italy... besides being the second most spoken language in Australia. It's also one of the four official languages in Switzerland... but on the same token, so are both German and French.

Oh... I was going to make an important point... I think you should go with a language you're passionate about... you're more likely to stick with a language if you love it.

International business...
Growing economies? Chinese (this will take years and years and years to learn properly compared to others, but also remember English is taught in most Chinese schools nowadays), Japanese

German is pretty useless to be honest.
Out of French/Spanish/Italian I think French would be more useful...

French would be useful for reading old EU documents. There are probably translations available, but apparently most of them used to be in French, so if not...

Chinese (this will take years and years and years to learn properly compared to others

Is Chinese really that difficult relatively speaking? So the first language I ever made the conscious choice to learn was the hardest one 0.o, and according to Sm's link I should learn easier languages first.

much as i hate to say it (loving german and all) i would advise french... its pretty universal, and with french and english you'll be able to cover most of the globe. that said i much preferred german to french, so who knows.
