Yeah after a few weeks you grow immune to the sight of drunk people wandering around drinking goon...

I can't believe no one has mentioned this yet and I'm not saying that any of the first years on VN are like this but just because you have independence and no one can really tell you what to do anymore:

That doesn't give you the right to act like a fucking three year old.

You're adults and you should act mature. Sure you can act silly with your mates but don't do stupid stunts like dress up in shark outfits and start tackling random people. That kind of thing is reserved for second and third years >.>

But seriously just be mature and don't act like dicks. If you get into a fight with someone bigger than you your favourite teacher won't be there to save your ass anymore and you will get beat up.

The most common kind of fight is more arguing about things than actual fisticuffs but it has happened.

I haven't seen any fights at uni.

But you get a whole lot of activists that get in your face. One time when I was trying to get into uni and these students were blocking all entries to the uni and are like "take the day off and support the cause (staff strike)", but the thing was my classes were running and I had a linear algebra MATLAB test (worth 5%).

oh yeah that's another piece of advice I can give re: activists...

Invest in an ipod + sunnies and they're less likely to bother you - this is especially useful during MSA election time, which nobody except the candidates care about. That way you can look engrossed in your music. Also, they won't see you accidentally looking their way. Cos once you look their way they'll take that as a sign of interest and ambush you. And when there's about a billion of them in the campus centre it's kind of difficult not to look at any of them.

Also, invest in a shirt that says "Fuck off I've already voted" or similar for use during election time.

EDIT: reading back this sounds like a "joking" post... I'm not joking, I'm actually serious, and if anyone can tell me where to get a "fuck off I've voted" shirt I'd very much appreciate it...

But you get a whole lot of activists that get in your face.
I had a Students for Palestine guy in my face, he wouldn't take "I'm not interested" for an answer and kept following me (wtf??) so finally I looked him in the eye and said "my boyfriend is Jewish" and I've never seen anyone back off so quickly

most ppl wouldn't form strong impressions on what you wear unless maybe you're also a member of a student political party with an extreme view and you play up to a stereotype. like, say, a socialist alternative with holes in their stockings (and a guy to boot :))

I rock up to uni in jeans, t-shirt and jacket. Lots of people seem to be constantly having a contest called 'who is the most indie?' and it looks like they got dressed in their grandmother's dark closet. If you like that sort of thing, then that's acceptable too.
That's what you get for going to Burgmann :P

I saw a guy at Melbourne Uni wearing flowerprint fisherman pants (and drinking goon..)

Yeah that's pretty common.

Soon you'll see people wearing stuff from Woodstock and smoking joints. In my engineering workshop I can remember asking my group if the people running it would be okay with me eating my lunch, I turn around and see someone drinking a beer.

There can be quite a few weirdo's on campus.

wtf....to think most of these ppl had to get 90+ for these courses.....
Hah, I know plenty of people like this. Most of them get great marks too ;)

Why are there so many activists on uni campuses anyway? I know that there are a few out and about in the general public, but one time at Melb Uni I was accosted by a "justice for palestine" jerk and a Marxist jerk within about 5 mins. (Hilariously, the Marxist guy tried to sell me something.) They're everywhere... reasons? I guess people feel "ideologically liberated" from their parents etc etc around uni age, but it seems strange to me still.

Ahahaha. There's nothing wrong with Burgmann. Well, not much wrong with Burgmann. I have plenty of friends who went there and they were mostly normal (though they've pretty much all moved out by now... Dear God I'm old :().

I remember hearing a girl at ANU saying she felt the lack of 'good' shopping and how her fellow students were turned out was a major turn-off for her. (And someone retorted that if she held such a view she wasn't worthy of "the great ANU.")
