Can someone please explain how the whole system works? Allocate+ was confusing enough but then I went to MUTTS and I was even more confused....I'm afraid my timetable is going to have lots of clashes...

MUTTS is just an airy-fairy piece of software that shows you all the lectures/tutes/etc that run for any given unit. People mainly use it to set up a 'draft' timetable, and then insert those choices into Allocate+. Which is where your timetable gets created.

but there are so many lectures and tutorials that my brain malfunctions and goes into stupidity mode for 30 minutes...

Yeah... I don't use MUTTS... I just hand-write it when I'm drafting my timetable... I can fiddle around with my 2nd/3rd prefs as well by writing over things and such.

I'm finding the whole preference system a bit confusing. Are my preferences for each activity treated individually, or does the system group together all the activities I label '1', for example, and submit that as my first preference timetable? Meaning all the 2s would get grouped together and submitted as my second preference timetable and so on. The reason I'm confused is because if they're treated individually, meaning I could get my first preference for one activity and my third for another, surely it's impossible to avoid a potential clash. This is why I would assume that all my first prefs get grouped together, however for some activities I'm asked to enter 10 preferences, and others only 5, leading to my confusion. Not sure if that made sense but I hope someone can help me.

Preferences don't get grouped.

Don't try to understand Allocate... you'll slowly delve into madness.

What a shitty system. How am I supposed to avoid a potential clash? Have every single preference at a different time? There wouldn't even be enough hours in a week.

thats why u focus on ur first preferences... all the 1's to make sure they don't clash.. don't really worry about ur 2nd or 3rd clashing
and if they do, i guess u can't do anything about it... if its a lecture then i guess thats fine

So what can I do if I do end up with a clash? And what is the likelihood that I'll get all my first preferences?

if it depends what type of clash is it... if its a prac... and there's another time for it ... u can try swapping

if its a lecture... u can skip one and then listen to the other online

if there's its a tute and theres one another time ... ask the send an email to the faculty

and if there's clashes everywhere! and there's no avoiding it and it seems like u will miss out on a lot then i guess u gotta change units

if u set it up so that u don't have clashes for ur first preferences u got a good chance of getting them

What a shitty system. How am I supposed to avoid a potential clash? Have every single preference at a different time? There wouldn't even be enough hours in a week.

The system's priority is to give you clash-free classes.

If it's possible for you to get a clash-free timetable, regardless of what your preferences are, you will get it. Just sometimes this means it will give you your first preferences for some classes, your second preferences for a couple and, if you're really lucky like me, a class time that isn't even any one of the ten preferences you entered but, amazingly, does not clash.

My advice is to focus on your 1st and 2nd preferences only... perhaps also a 3rd preference if your first two are already overfilled. Other than that, I usually make the rest of my preferences clash with auto-allocated stuff so it gives me my 1st and 2nd prefs... the system's kind of dumb like that. Just this semester I don't have any auto-allocated classes... so that poses a slight problem to my usual timetabling skillz.

The best way to get all your first preferences is to organise them so that it's the only way to have a clash-free timetable. The system (in my experience) will ALWAYS give you the clash-free option. That's how I've gotten all my first preferences for the four semesters I've been at uni so far.
