How much do you think the GAT affects your result?

Just wondering, can a student be affected severly in a subject if they score poorly on the GAT. Say for example; if you are very very good at methods but you scored poorly on the GAT can that limit you from getting a 40+ score?

You should know this - since your "vcaa"  :P. It doesn't do squat to it.

It only affects it if you apply for a derived score and it's used in the calculation of your marks due to a really poor exam performance.

This is 2nd hand evidence so it may be wrong, but apparently someone at my school who got 39-42 on Maths/Science section got 50 for Spesh, Physics, and Chem.
2009
~ Methods (Non-CAS) [48 --> 49.4]

2010
~ Spesh [50 --> 51.6]
~ Physics [50 --> 50]
~ Chem [43 --> 46.5]
~ English [46 --> 46.2]
~ UMEP Maths [5.0]

2010 ATAR: 99.90
Aggregate 206.8

what is the point of the GAT?

there are all these conflicting reports i get about it.  all i know is it plays a large part in your SS if you apply for a derived score.

i would like to know:
-is the GAT used in the statistical moderation of SAC's or not?  the document on the vcaa site doesn't seem to mention it in any detail.
-what happens if you don't sit the GAT?
-do any uni's look at your GAT result?  i heard that it was going to come in or something.

from my knowledge (someone feel free to correct me if i am wrong :P ):
- the gat can be used in the moderation of results if there is a huge difference between your maths/science/english score on your exam and the result shown on your gat.
it will NEVER drag your mark down if you get low GAT results, we are told that if you get really good GAT (high 40's) in a particular section and the vce subjects for those sections are much lower, they push your mark up (apparently this is most true for english)
- the gat is not compulsary but if you happen to get sick during hte year or something went wrong then your basically screwd as they have nothing to compare any of your results too aside from SACs (it is used for derived scores)
- nah they don't, unis only look at study scores & ENTER.(or other criteria)

I was told that the GAT is held to minimise any negative impact of disadvantaged personal circumstances on quite a number of VCE students within victoria. For example, if a student has been injured during his/her end of year exam period and was unable to attend an exam or underperformed, he might still be able to get into a university course that took the standardised mid-year GAT score into consideration for entrance. "A safety net", my teacher always describes the GAT this way.

Thus, it won't affect your awesome VCE score at all :) GAT is only used to ensure the fairness of everyone's chance of getting into his/her desired tertiary educational course.
well the limit can turn into a threshold..

Monash does look at the GAT, sort of.

Quote
Question
I hear that Monash will be giving consideration for General Achievement Test (GAT) scores for entry to courses in 2010. How will this work?

Answer
Applicants through the Victorian Tertiary Admissions Centre (VTAC) will be able to authorise VTAC to obtain their General Achievement Test (GAT) scores from the Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority.

Monash will give some consideration to applicants whose GAT predicted ENTER is higher than there actual achieved ENTER.

These applicants will receive a small bonus (up to nine points) on their aggregate VCE score, and will be ranked slightly higher for selection. This may result in a small number of applicants receiving an offer, who wouldn’t have been eligible on the basis of their ENTER alone.
