I was bored so I did some random maths questions from this book but I wasnt able to solve this one:

John drew a straight line across a square piece of paper to divide it into 2 regions. He drew another straight line which divided it into a maximum of 4 regions.
What is the minimum number of straight lines he can draw to have at least 11 regions on a new piece of paper?
A)3 B)4 C)5 D)6

Can someone please show me how to do this. Thanks. The correct answer is the 5th letter of this post.

That'd be the fifth :D

It would seem that the pattern is as follows:

No. of lines:      0      1      2      3      4  ...
No. of regions:  1      2      4      7      11 ...

EDIT: This is a quadratic function :)

Let

Then, after subbing (0,1), (1,2) & (2,4), and solving,

The equation is :P

I wrote the answer in the table: 4 lines for 11 regions

(the quadratic bit was for a little bit of fun :D)

Lol. Do you know how to do this problem visually? Like to use the lines the cut the square. If so, can you use paint and attach here.

I'm a shocking drawer, maybe if I explain it, it will be better :)

Basically each line that you draw HAS to cross all of the lines drawn previously to obtain the maximum number of regions, eg. the fourth line must cross the three drawn before it. This allows you to see the maximum regions, and if you put them into a table, the pattern is obvious
