Question from my SAC
« on: March 24, 2010, 08:21:33 pm »

Here is a question that was on my SAC today and I'm not too sure if I did it correctly. It is a transformations question that goes:
1. Given the graph y=x^2
2. It is dilated by a factor of 2 in the y-axis.
3. Reflected in the x-axis.
4. Translated +3units parallel to the x-axis.

I'm mainly concerned about the dilation in the y-axis...
Thanks

"in the y-axis" ? Does that mean from the y-axis, or parallel to the y-axis? (from the x-axis)

in the y-axis means parallel to the y-axis i think, so i'm afraid you may be wrong :(

Is it right that they cant use "paralell to" the y axis in the exams?

Everything is "from the y axis, from the x axis" right?

I don't know, from memory it doesn't use any specific language in the study design. But on one exam they did use "from the #-axis" in the examiners report.

0.o I am pretty sure I used "parallel to" in the exams. Why wouldn't you be allowed to use it? It's more official-sounding than "from the...".

I thought that "from the... " sounded better. haha

But they are both correct.

Which question did we have to describe dilations??

Nah, I was just wondering because in the Maths Quest, it only uses "from the #-axis" and our teacher told us thats all they would use for questions in the exam

Gee why didnt we use essentials :/
