Then shouldn't all courses have 99+ ENTERs?

A lot of people would find it strange that medicine's so popular. Large exposure to dangerous diseases (although all efforts are made to minimise this), long training, exceptionally high course load, long hours, often poor work conditions...

I'm also not sure what proportion of law students have a geniune passion in the subject when they start. Or dentistry students, for that matter.

it's actually so very obvious why medicine is so popular as it is deemed probably the most competitive (aka: wanted/popular) course.

Yeah, i cant see why anyone would want to be a dentist or have a passion for it but thats just me.

Also med is one of the more competitive because it *is* popular. The reason its hard to get into is that there are so many people that want to get in, compared to so few places. It has one of the highest if not near the very top ratio of people wanting to do it as compared to the places.

I dont think many people really think of this aspect or focus on it that much before they gain entry into medicine.

I know, I know.

I'm well aware of the fact that there are individuals who possess a genuine desire to do medicine, but I honestly think they're in the minority of the people who apply. Most applicants aren't consciously aware of this - from speaking to a lot of people at my school, it seems as though people glorify medicine and want to be doctors without having a sufficient understanding of what it entails. I find that the whole concept of 'med school' and applying for medicine is completely disengaged from what the job requires. If the ATAR/UMAT/interview requirements for medicine were dropped by at least 20%, I don't think as many people would apply...

@ Crappy, you think they would?

Give it 5 years of having a cut off in the 70s, and I really don't think you'd have 2000 applicants per year.

nahh i agree, medicine is considered an extreme prestige there are many who choose it for a variety of reasons and although it's very hard to get into, if it was for some strange reason easier, it would barely change anything.

where did you get 2000? there's about 3000+ people that apply for unsw med school alone, i think monash is similar haha.

Oh, I just threw a figure out there for the sake of it.

But seriously, I wonder how many Medicine applicants would go into a field like Nursing (which doesn't have a sky-high ATAR requirement)...

There wouldn't be a huge amount, but plenty of nurses just want to be nurses and not do medicine.
Medicine and Nursing are very, very different, just because someone doesn't choose to go into nursing after not getting into medicine means nothing. It's like applying for news presenter position and after getting rejecting deciding to try something else and not become the camera man instead, which although it's in the same type of field, it's not the same work; and there are people who are more interested in becoming a cameraman then a news presenter. (maybe a bit extreme.. but still hope you get my point)

The health sector has HUGE amounts of government money poured into it. Being a Doctor = $$$$$$. Who wouldnt want that kind of money? (theres also other factors, i know). Also as a society, becoming a doctor is viewed as a very high achievement, so alot of people when they aim high, they aim for Medicine.

Agreed, the financial incentive is BIG. Although the majority may not be infatuated with the thought of being a doctor or a dentist, if they find that they DON'T MIND it, then they might as well go for it, you know? As long as you're not terribly unhappy. And sometimes, there is nothing wrong with that. Some people might come from poorer backgrounds and want a better life for themselves.

People don't want to do nursing, not because of the low ENTER, but just because in our society, alot of people whom I know who are doctors keep telling me, they get treated like crap sometimes in hospital and do all the dirty (literally) work. Depends on your passion for it.
Feel free to message on dentistry questions

I'm curious what are the requirements for undergrad med and dentistry back in the times with UoM offered it? (UMAT and ENTER)

med was like 99.90+ 90%ile umat for interview,
or 99.50 + 100%ile for umat for interview.

wait, maybe not that high, but something absolutely ridiculously high (maybe it was that)... i read about it ages ago.

so no one knows about the double degrees :O?
I thought clearly-in for med was about 99.75.

for vet science it was 99.70 clearly in..

but for med there has was never a clearly-in as it was based on umat/enter to get an interview.
you could have got 99.95 and in the 80%iles and not gotten an interview.
