Is there a big difference between someone who goes to Deakin and Monash when they graduate (assuming same course)? i.e. employers give priority to Monash over Deakin simply because they know it is a more reputable University?

Also, is this the case for all courses?
Yeah say you are applying for a mathematical lecturer, they would most likely give the spot to someone from MIT or Princeton then someone who went to deakin
PhD @ MIT (Economics).

The cold hard fact is that the only people who go to non Go8 unis are those who couldn't get into Go8 unis, and thus going to a place like Deakin automatically signals to employers that you're an intellectually weaker individual (relative to those who go to Melb or Monash)

Now of course there are exceptions to this rule (maybe the university offers a highly specialized degree's in some specific sub field, etc) but it's backed by a lot of evidence (unlike most of the post's in this thread, which seem to have originated from highschool randoms)

While universities like Melbourne and Monash have been known to have higher employment rates than 2nd tier unis (especially in certain areas such as Law) is this because Melbourne Uni and Monash produce higher quality graduates or because higher quality students tend to choose to go to Melb Uni & Monash?

Also while I'm sure there are certain organisations that still have preferences towrads 1st tier Uni's (probably because they themselves went to them) it's not as common as it used to be.

For law at least - many of the top law firms contain stuffy traditionalist lawyers who are so far up their own arses that they can't see past the Go8 when going through internship applications - I'm guessing partly because the partners themselves would have gone to one of them, and don't trust any other uni. I've heard stories of firms automatically throwing out any applications from Deakin, VU etc.

Pretty much the entire legal industry is elitist like that though - I don't think there's ever been a High Court justice who wasn't from a Go8 uni, for example. So I suppose you just accept it when you accept your place in a law degree.

I'm sure though you would still be able to practice law and make it to the top tier firms and even higher if you wanted, it just means that you might have to work harder gaining good experience than Go8ers would. It really depends on what you want to do as well, because as long as you have an accredited law degree, nothing stops you from starting your own firm or whatever. Unfortunately, the university you go to is a bit of an elephant in the room, and I think that really sucks. Maybe it's a good idea, particularly for law, if you do undergrad wherever and masters at a Go8? I'm not sure how necessary masters is for law though.
