I'm sure there's still a shortage in after hours medical services in urban areas and some specialties are probably spread a bit thin but i see your point.

According to the government maps the area i live in is considered a "area of workplace shortage" so food for thought maybe... *shrug*

I think it depends on the university. If it's a 2nd tier university, you're going to have to work quite hard to get into a good postgrad course or into a good 1st job. If it's a 1st tier Australian university, you're likely to find jobs a bit more easily than your counterparts from other places, and you can get into a fantastic international postgraduate course if you excel. However, if you go overseas to Harvard/Yale/Princeton/MIT/Oxford/Cambridge/Stanford, you're extremely likely to get into a brilliant postgraduate course, and if you work in business, you'll probably be able to charge a LOT because you've been to the best of the best. One of my friends is starting at Princeton in September and she's going to be set up for life.

Do you reckon you have to have exceptional marks at Uni to get a great job after graduating? :(
Raw Scores:

I don't think many people get great jobs right after graduating. It takes time and hard work.

Given that entry into uni is based on year 12 results, employees probably don't see that in itself as relevant. However, in terms of your university transcript, some unis are known for marking harshly and such, so a transcript of passes from Monash may be seen as better than a transcript of passes from Deakin. However, straight HDs from Deakin v. Passes from Monash would be a different story. Employees are interested in how you're doing now/recently, not 3-5 years ago, so uni results (especially in your final year) are much more important than high school results, and relevant job experience after graduating is, in turn, much more important than uni results.

I guess it can be looked at in several ways,

While universities like Melbourne and Monash have been known to have higher employment rates than 2nd tier unis (especially in certain areas such as Law) is this because Melbourne Uni and Monash produce higher quality graduates or because higher quality students tend to choose to go to Melb Uni & Monash?

Also while I'm sure there are certain organisations that still have preferences towrads 1st tier Uni's (probably because they themselves went to them) it's not as common as it used to be.

I think the bottom line is that because there are employers that prefer 1st tier Uni's then by going to one you do increase your chances of gaining employment. By how much, I'm not too sure.

For certain areas that are high in demand, such as Health and Engineering, I don't think it matters that much where you study unless you're wanting to apply to very competitive positions.

I think that soft skills, relevants work experience, extra-curriculars (such as sports and volunteer work) and grades are more important than which uni you went to.

i've heard there has been a monash+melbourne only policy in some institutions. looking at top financial jobs (investment banking) + law

I've heard similar rumours.

There are some differences in the standard of education between universities... I was studying at work during my lunch break, and the woman who's doing accounting at VU was pouring over my books and was like O.O It was only a first-year accounting subject, but they hadn't even touched on half the material at VU. I don't know how vast the gap is in general though - obviously the Monash-VU contrast is at the extremes. Personally, I think highly of the accounting course offered at RMIT - very practical and "real-life". I don't know much about Commerce at Deakin, so I can't comment on it.

Having said that, I don't think it matters at all beyond your first few years in the industry... once you've been given the chance to prove yourself and such, people don't mind where your piece of paper came from.

Edit: I'm only talking about Commerce, btw.

My micro tutor briefly mentioned game theory in the last tute, and how hard it was and stuff and covered in second year. A few weeks ago my UoM friend in comm first year asked me if I had covered game theory yet.

What your friend learnt in first year and what you learn in second year might be completely different.
Game theory is pretty annoying...

What I've done so far is pretty fun. Although we've only covered the basics.
