99.90 VCE Tutor: English Language and French
« on: April 04, 2010, 11:43:08 am »
Dear students and parents,

I offer tutoring and mentoring for the VCE subjects: English Language and French.

My scores for these subjects were as following:
- English Language: 45 -> 48
- French: 48 -> 53

I have a thorough understanding of the English Language course and am willing to help you understand any details that your teacher may have missed. You will be provided with notes that I compiled myself as well as some practice SACs. As this is a highly technical subject, it is important to understand the definitions and concepts involved. I will help you develop a greater understanding of the concepts covered so that you may achieve your goals. In addition, I will place an emphasis on essay-writing which is where most students lose their marks on the exam and help you to develop skills, as well as spontaneity and originality.

I received the French Subject Prize for 6 years consecutively in a highly competitive environment. Last year I was the overall winner of the Alliance Francaise Berthe Mouchette Competition, 1st prize for the oral component and 3rd prize for the writing. The previous year, I was the winner of the writing component. I can help with the following areas:
- grammar points
- reading comprehension
- listening comprehension
- essay-writing
- general conversation + detailed study work

My rates are $35/hour and $50 for 1 1/2 hours. Longer sessions and rates may be negotiable, as are group sessions.

If interested, please contact me at [email protected] or give me a call.

I look forward to meeting you and I promise that you won't be disappointed!

I currently have quite a few students so I sincerely apologise for my lack of availability outside the posted times.
I am however now accepting expressions of interest for 2011. Due to timetabling difficulties, I am likely to only accept groups of students for next year. If you can get a group together that is willing to travel to Melbourne University Parkville sometime after-school on a weekday, then I'd be most happy to try to work out an arrangement nice and early. Please note that if there are at least two of you, I will be able to book a private room at a library.

Just a quick recap of what tuition entails:
- going through concepts covered in class, as well as classwork - though I'm not going to do your homework for you!
- practice SACs
- essay advice
- general advice with EL, French or even maths!

You will be provided with a complete set of my summary notes as well as notes from third-party sources, so it's important that I know your exact numbers - I really don't to waste a ton of money printing notes for non-existent students.

My rates are as following:
- 1:1 tuition: $35/h or $50 for 1h30
- Group tuition: $25/h pp or $35pp for 1h30

Please let me know of your interest by sending an email to [email protected]

What makes you want to provide this service? Capital gain or just wanting to teach?

nbalakers24: Thanks for the praise! I hope that the exam went well!

schnappy: I consider tutoring as a "job" and as such, I take it seriously with a professional approach. So it allows me to fund my lunch yet I think I can make more of a difference than with a typical student job, eg/ waking people up in the middle of the night and telling them they "won" a trip to Timbuktu. Very much a cliched response but it certainly pleases me to see my students progress and gain more confidence in themselves.

Note to all:
I might offer intensive summer tuition for English Language, probably a 3 or 4 hour session broken into two, to cover Unit 3. I'm hesitant to cover both Units because I think it might be a little too much without some solid foundations that can be built upon throughout the school year. Regardless of that, you will get a copy of all of my notes as well as the opportunity for a further session to cover the basics of Unit 4 sometime around mid-year 2011. Cost will be as per usual but with a $20 surcharge for printing and binding. I'm not certain that this will be occurring but if there is sufficient interest for group sessions around mid/late-January, I'll strongly consider it. Understandably... there will be no intensive tuition for French at this time of year because of the sheer amount of grammar/vocab/etc to teach!

Hi all,

I think I already have enough students for 2011 but since it looks like I'll be free
Virtually all day on Wednesday, it would be possible to fit some students in from 9am-12pm and 1pm-3pm. A bit of a long shot but I know that several schools don't have class on Wednesday, so it could be a convenient alternative to after school tuition.

Regards,

Nelson

Unfortunately Nelson, although Kate did reasonably well in her sacs during the year, she ended up with a D (hmmm) in her exam.
It would appear that the tutoring was a bit of a waste of time for her  :-\

Is it because Kate didn't do her own extra study?

This tutor sounds pro though, deserves a bump!

Hello everyone,

I'm a little surprised that this thread has gone off an unexpectedly... strange tangent. Dorothy, I'm sorry to hear that Kate did not perform as well as she could have. I don't know what went wrong but she may have had a little trouble applying her knowledge in an exam setting. I apologize for the comments made by the other posters, who, I'm sure, didn't mean to offend.
