ive been through it myself, my friend who had a tutor from xin jing san did chinese SLA 2008 and that teacher was his oral examiner, both knew it but still did the oral, he ended up with 46.
theres more, and it's not just politics, theres too much luck involved in chinese LOTE, if u got SL for ur oral examiner ur basically screwed (gloamy would know what im talking about

With your friend, it happens all too often. There's a lot more "tricks" if you want to call it involved, but I don't think I'm in the position to reveal them. If you go or went to a top performing Chinese school, you'd know what I mean.

But won't that be the case with all languages that have an oral component?
It's not as prevalent as Chinese. Chinese and all its components are notorious for this.
And with S.L., you are screwed to the max. If you do get S.L., pray to God that you get 100% in the written exam, because in all seriousness, that will probably be the only thing that will get you a 30+.
