Would debating over prompts for contexts such as encountering conflict over the net (On VN :)) be a good way to broaden our minds to this topic? Does anyone like this idea and think it will help? Or do ppl think it wont help?  :buck2:

Awesome :D

I dont think it would be ideal to use examples out of the texts we are studying as they would all be different?  Maybe using examples out of real life can be understood by all of us?

Yeah very true, I'm not really planning on incorporating examples from 'real life' or really the texts to that extent (not sure if I will be penalised for this?) but I'm just planning on producing speeches or short stories which directly relates to one of the themes within the text. Although I don't think this approach will recieve top marks, considering all I see on this forum are essays for context peices, have never seen a monologue or speech or anything along those lines

uhh yeah everyone seems to take the essay approach. I'm not too sure what the examiners like more?
I heard some schools teach their students to not use examples from the book in their first few essays so they dont get into the habit of writing a Text Response for everything in English....

Sounds like an excellent idea, it should definitely give a deeper understanding of the whole area.

How exactly do you propose it would work?

I think one person should give a prompt (Dunno if in this thread or just make a new thread?). Then their idea/arguement.
Others can then agree with that arguement by further strengthening it or challenge it and give their own idea.
But i guess it should be limited to one or two arguements per post, then they can give another arguement/rebut only after someone else has posted their idea. This will give opportunity for others to chip in and give their ideas as well.

I think it's a good way to develop our wider thinking. Here is a prompt we can start off with.

"Conflict can result in a positive outcome"

2015: Doctor of Dental Surgery, UoM

well i actually need help with a similar prompt so instead of creating a new thread i thought ill start the ideas :)

so positives that come out of conflict:

we listen to the other side so we're acknowledging their opinion
we compromise and learn more about the other side??

You're assuming compromise is good. In a conflict of right versus wrong, compromise is not good.

Firstly Its a prompt, and you dont have to agree with it. As seen in the media, conflict generally doesn't result in a positive outcome, take the war on Iraq an example, its been almost 10 years and american soldiers are still in that country trying to find Osama Bin F***face
